Message: alright i have a 99 4x4 dakota with the 3.9 v6.
I have been looking to get a little better gas mileage and better power out of my engine. I was just wondering what kind of ballpark cost we are talkin about for performance exhaust systems and new air intake and a 180 t'stat if someone could help me out i would appreciate it.

Message: I have a 98 V6 4x4 and I know what you mean as far as getting a little more power out of the beast. As far as exhaust, really just replacing the muffler(cost:around $100 for muffler and install) will be sufficient to give a little boost. I went with a flowmaster and it gives the truck a nice, deep rumble tone. As far as air intake, a K&N FIPK is recommended (cost around $250). I tried something different though....I went with an Edelbrock round 10x3 inch filter (part # 1208, cost: $25) that sits dirctly on the throttle body. I left in the original airfilter box and just removed the filter to still allow cooler air under the hood. In my opinion this worked better than a K&N clone I had made and about 10 times cheaper. The one thing that really helped out the performance in my truck was the Jet Stage II chip. Some people have mixed feeling about it but I have the same truck as you and this woke up the truck quite a bit (cost: I got mine from EBAY for $150, new they're about $220 I think). Along with that you should install the 180 degree thermostat. Get a Robert Shaw Thermostat (cost: $10). Those few items should definately do some good to your truck.

Message: Interfere with normal driving?? Not at all. As far as gas mileage....well I'm sure glad the price on gas has gone way down. These mods will definately give you a noticeable boost in power. I'm getting a little better gas mileage than came stock. I get about 20mpg freeway and about 15 around town I'd say. But nothing will improve mileage drastically. I tend to go to town on the accelerator now due to the increase in power and still get a little better gas mileage than the sticker said. But again none of these mods will "interfere" with normal driving, they will just make you look forward to the light turning green.......especially with the Jet Stage II chip. One mod I haven't yet done is installing a modified throttle body. I've been told this is one of the best performance for the $$$ mods you can do...I'm saving for the Fastman throttle body which I'll probably get within the month. Anyhow....good luck.
