Subject: CPS modification? IP: Logged
Message: I was just wondering what all the Crankshaft Position Sensor modification is supposed to do to my truck, performance wise. Also wondering where it is located on my engine and how exactly to perform this mod. Thanks a bunch for any information.

Message: It advances the timing by a few degrees...do you have an auto or manual?
On autos, it's located on the bellhousing of the tranny. Here's a how-to I made a while back.
http://www.ohiodakotas.net/docs/Crankshaft%20Position%20Sensor.doc
Manuals are similar, but the location is a tad bit different.

Message: it worked for me. copy & paste the link into your browsers address bar. it may take a little while.
if you have a manual trans you may not notice much of an improvement because i believe that DC put a little more timing advance into the programming for the manuals than the autos.

Message: It opened. I had to hand type it into the address bar, it didn't copy and paste correctly or something. Thank you very much! And one more question, will the gains be very noticable or only if you pay close attention?

Message: Noticable....
I just did it a few weeks ago. I have a auto, and I managed to get it done without innner fender removal.

Message: i have a manual trans. all i had to do was lay on my back under the truck to take it out. very easy.
you will notice a little more pep when you hit the go pedal.

Message: You *can* do it without removing the inner fender but it involves a lot more reaching and feeling around...much easier in my opinion to just buy new clips and pop the inner fender out.

Message: The bolts on mine are standard hex head bolts with allen head drives in them. My Gearwrench reach the first one no problem the second bolt(upper one) after I got a little loose w/ a open end. I then used a allen wrench straight down between the bracket arms for the trans dipstick tube. When I reinstalled it I used electrical tape and taped the bolt onto the end of the allen wrench. It worked for me. Anyway follow GB2000's instructions that are on Ohiodakotas.net.
.......And thanks for all the info GB2000 your instructions are great.

Message: I,m gonna have to disagree on this mod, I dont think moving it will do anything. The sensor doesnt know what position its in, it only senses the gaps in the flywheel. you could move it anywhere on the bell housing and its only going to measure the gaps.

well try putting a timing light on the motor before and after and see what you get!

Message: I've never tested it...but I'm not the first to do it (just the first to write a mod and include pics...that I'm aware of). I'm fairly certain someone HAS actually tested it to be true however.
And if this mod doesn't increase timimg, could you please enlighten us as to why it causes some engines to ping like hell without running a cooler thermostat? I'd guess it's the advance in timing causing that...kinda like when you set a Superchips tuner to Performance and run too low octane gas. Pings like hell due to the timing advance. I dunno, my reasoning above may be totally flawed, but like I said...I don't have any proof myself, but I'm fairly certain it does actually advance the timing. I think Larry mentioned it advances it between 3-5 degrees...or something like that.

Message: I cant say for sure either, but looking at how it works I doubt it will do anything. Its the same type sensor as the camshaft sensor ( hall effect )which is inside the distributor. Turning the distributer to try and advance it is the same principal, but yet it wont change timing.

Message: copied and pasted:
All Hall-Effect sensors use three wires to do the job. One wire carries the power voltage and a second wire supplies the sensor ground. Both are supplied by the ignition module or computer. The third wire is the "toggle". This wire is the sensor's output to the computer. The voltage rises, usually to power voltage, and falls to near zero with the movement of the shutter as explained earlier. The signal is a square wave and therefore needs no analog to digital conversion to be read by the computer. The computer measures the time between the pulses and calculates RPM for fuel and timing requirements.

Message: you are changing it's position in relation to where the crank and cam are. yeah it just reads the gaps but reads them when the crank is in a different part of the stroke than in the stock position.
just like turning the dist. won't affect timing but does affect injector sync.

Message: It does not read crank position, only RPM. There is no crank trigger on the flywheel at say top dead center. Its only measuring the time between the gaps.

Message: if you move it 1/4" , the pcm will see the "gap" 1/4" sooner than it should have. i can't calculate how much earlier that would be in degrees rotation of the crank but it would be earlier. yes it still reads gaps just like a crank trigger. the only diff is it reads them from the flywheel instead of a trigger wheel mounted on the front of the crank.

Message: Thats not how a hall efect sensor works. I dont know how many times I have to say it. I even posted info on how it works. It only measures the time between gaps. Its just meausuring RPM Thats it.
Go right ahead and do this useless mod and think youve actuall done something. I posted the info, use it as you wish.
