Subject: Few questions from a guy trying to learn

While reading these posts i noticed things that come up alot and i have a little idea about what they are and what they do. but notice i said little idea. so im just gona ask now before i make an ass out of myself later. first thing would be what is the IAT sensor and what does it do? The PCM. what is that and whats it do. also i have heard that the computer must relearn things. i put a flowmaster 40 series delta on my truck about 2 weeks ago. does the computer have to relearn for this mod? is it too late? and how do i make the computer relearn things. sorry so long just trying to further my education. thanks

iat - it controls the condensation in the intake. when there is to much moisture it gets hotter and burns it off. relocating the iat sensor to the intake fools the pcm into thinking that there is to much moisture in the intake manifold and thus raises the temp.

pcm - stands for performance computer modulator, its main function is to communicate to the iat. its really a worthless device and should be thrown away after relocating the iat, since the iat will be getting direct reads on the moisture content.

What the heck are you talking about, Blackdak? :0)

IAT is just what it stands for, "Intake Air Temprature", it measures the incoming air temps. The computer then takes that information, along with other readings, and modifies the timing and air/fuel ratio. The problem is that, in the stock location, the IAT tends to get heat soaked. By this, I mean that once the engine is up to temp, the IAT may be telling the computer that the incoming air is somewhere around 200 degrees F (according to a few sources, one being www.fast4x4.net)

PCM - PCM is not Performance Computer Modulator. I'm not entirely sure what it stands for though, but I've heard ECM and ECCM used as well. Basically the ECM/ECCM is the Engine Control Computer Module. I -think- PCM is Performance Computer Module, which you plug into the Engine Control Computer. It's a software upgrade for your engine, basically, which further modifies timing, automatic tranny shifts, and air/fuel ratios. :0)

Ugh... bed needed...

BTW, above I say I'm not sure about the PCM. I know it's a module you plug into the computer that gives it a software upgrade basically, but I don't know -exactly- what the acronym stands for. Probally close though...

Bed...

Ugh... darnit, it's four feet away...

It pretty much controls everything. Auto Tranny, engine, dashboard, overhead console (if you got one), everything...... And that's why our trucks are getting increasingly harder to mess with every next year model that comes out.

Really? The Dodge dealer told me that there were actually three computer modules in my truck. One for the engine, one for the chassis, and one for something else that I forget about. :0/

Wasn't exactly sure if I believed him at the time though, he struck me more of a clerk than a technician.

I'll have to check the manual, but I thought the PCM kinda ran everything..... He may be right, though.
