 Subject: A/C Clutch

I have a 99' Dakota 3.9L. Earlier this year the A/C Clutch was turning off when it was not supposed too. I had this check at a local repair shop. I double checked and this was happening. I bought an A/C clutch from a Dodge Dealer. This is the only place for this factory part. I placed the part on and a New belt. With in a week the belt was screaming when you started the engine. At first I thought it was a bad bearing on the clutch. But when I spray Belt dressing on or change the belt the problem goes away and then reappears. I noticed that the Pulley on the new clutch is not coated like the new vehicles on the lot or the old part. I am wondering if this is the problem? Is their someone who would know this and be able to tell me if this clutch was missed in the coating or do I have some other problem.

Does it squeal when the A/C clutch is engaged or when it is off or is it no matter what ?

You replaced the clutch? Are you sure that was the problem in the first place? If it was staying on or off too long then it's either a bad pressure switch or a low or overcharged system. Not sure about the squeal, check alternator and water pump bearings out. They usually go long before the Compressor clutch.

The squeal is all the time.
The old clutch was being told to be ON. But the magnet was not able to pull the two friction plate together. The clutch surface will wear and then the friction surface will get eaten away.
The upper and Lower switches are working correctly.
What I am trying to find out is the surface of the pulley on a new clutch were the belt rides supposed to be coated. Most pulleys on a Belt drive will be coated with a spray that will allow good grip of the pulley by the belt. When I bought this clutch the pulley had no coating on the surface wear the belt rides. If you look at a new compressor the pulley has a coating. The old Pulley has some coating on the surface and allows the belt to grip it.
Dodge does not put out much information about their vehicles. Ford I can purchase a pass for one month and have total acces to shop manuals and Technical Service bulletins and Field Up Dates.

Have you checked for proper voltage to engage the clutch magnets correctly? Check your belt very closely. You may be off one grove on one pully. Also check idler wheel for ware.

Sounds like your compressor bearings are seizing up, and that's why the clutch can't hold.
