Subject: '97 Check engine/Limp in mode

I have a '97 3.9V6 auto trans with 70K miles. Started it up and the Check Engine Lamp came on. It appeared to be in Limp-in mode as it would not shift out of third into overdrive, would not shift down even at a stop, but could be manually shifted into second, not first. I connected a code reader and came up woth P1389. Can someone explain the Limp-in mode and possibly what P1389 is? I cleared the code and all has been OK for about 100 miles. Haven used the truck since.

sounds like your ASD realy is on the fritz. try swapping it with the horan or a/c relay and see if that cures the problem. then go buy a new relay.

Thanks. I'll try the ASD. Can you tell me what the function of the ASD relay is? Also, under what conditions will it go into the limp-in mode?

Limp is when the computer loses a main input
signal at that time it goes into limp what that
means is its running on the base computer tables

ASD powers the
o2 sensor
injectors

try the relay swap from like A/C they are all the
same 30 amp relays in the power dist box under
hood

Auto Shut Down it turns everything off the comp
needs to see the ASD voltage and is turned on by
the comp on the ground side

so posible bad ground or splice in the wire
harnas from relay to comp
