Subject: Increasing gas milage IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 96 Dakota Extended cab, with the 3.9L v6. I was wondering what is are some easy things I can do to increase my milage? This truck will not be driven much, but when it is it will be in the city, and on the highway when I come home from college. I am on a tight budget so Im looking for the most bang for my buck to help me increase my milage.

Message: try the simple mods first
good tune up NGK FR5 plugs or Halos
brass cap and rotor (Echlin from Napa)
good wires 8mm taylor
MSD 8.5
CPS mod
TPS mod
IAT mod
high flow cat converter
high flow muffler
synthetic fluids (of your choice)
if your truck has over 75,000
another good investment is a new EGR valve
and keep up with the tire pressure

Message: Curly, i think you mean O2 not EGR. '96 won't have an EGR. but overall, good suggestions. try changing your driving habits too. you'd be surprised how much that will help.

Message: 1996-2004 Daks - no EGR. Before and after this time frame have them.

Message: 88 dakota 3.9 4X4 5 speed,
I switched to the Halo plugs and gained 2 miles per gallon. Went from 18-19 to 20-21 mpg. I do have a first generation Dak, not the Mag engine.
remaned it at 172,000 have 15,000 on it now. I was very impressed with the halo plugs. More power, smoother running, and better mileage. The only thing I didn't gain was faster starts, but it wasn't hard to start to begin with.
I was using Bosch plus 2 plugs
