Subject: Noisey lifters? IP: Logged
Message: O.K, I have just about had enough! I replaced all of my roller lifters because every time I started the truck after it sat for awhile, I had 1 or more lifters that would click away for a few seconds till the oil pressure got up to speed. It is still doing it after I went through all the trouble to replace them. No, it isn't an exhaust manifold leak or a timing chain rattle. I have checked the noise with my stethoscope and it is definately a lifter rattle. It clatters just for a short time like the lifter has bled down overnight. What the heck is causing this!! I have used the premium oil filter with the proper valve and I have also added some Lucas oil stabilizer to try to help. What is the cure!!!

Message: If your oil and filter are good quality as mentioned, it is possible you have 1 or more weak lifters. This isn't as bad as it sounds going with what you said. A lifter that bleeds down overnight but pumps up and works correct in a warm engine is not considered defective. On the other hand, It's Possible to get a bad filter in any brand but very rare. I think I would just go ahead and try another filter unless the engine was doing this prior to installing this one.

Message: It appears that the bleed down may be normal according to some write-ups but I am curious as to why this has started at 90,000 km and was never there before. I am using the premium NAPA filter and 5W30 oil. Seems strange to me as I replaced all lifters with new Echlin parts from NAPA. They assured me that they were of good quality. I had replaced the lifters in 2005 because of the same reason but a different brand, can't remember which kind. Thought maybe they were faulty and tried it again. Won't do it a 3rd time though, got to be a reason for this.

Message: Today i went out and bought Castrol GTX Superior Sludge Protection 10w 30 oil with a Fram Oil Filter. Since we both had Napa oil i was thinkin maybe that has something to do with it, i know its weird but whatever. I should be able to tell you tonight if i still have the click after work.

Message: you may still have it with the Fram filter. i've tried them and don't use them anymore because of the same problem. after 1k miles or so, if my truck sat for a few hours, it would tick slightly right at start up.
changed to another brand and all is good. Also, my opinion here, i wouldn't use Castrol either. i had bad experience with that oil. no engine failure but, cooked on crud all over the valvetrain after 50k miles. i've only used Valvoline ever since.
filters, either WIX, Oreilly MicroGard or AC Delco and have never had any problems.

Message: Another thing you could try is adding Rislone to your oil...my buddy's dad runs a car lot and he says that stuff works miracles. You can buy a bottle for a few bucks at Walmart.
I believe Seafoam is also sposed to help free up sticky lifters and such...plus it cleans out virtually everything in your engine.
You can add it to your gas tank, crankcase, and even pour some down the throttle body and clean everything out.

Message: "you may still have it with the Fram filter. i've tried them and don't use them anymore because of the same problem. after 1k miles or so, if my truck sat for a few hours, it would tick slightly right at start up." Please explain how an oil filter can possibly affect lifter bleed-down.
This is normal.
"Also, my opinion here, i wouldn't use Castrol either. i had bad experience with that oil. no engine failure but, cooked on crud all over the valvetrain after 50k miles."
I have used Castrol GTX for 157K miles in my last car, for a large percentage of the 276K miles in my current car, and for much of the last 40K miles on my Dak, which has 165K miles. Here's the valvetrain of my car, with well over 200K miles:

The crud ain't from your oil.

Message: Until I bought my Dakota I used Castrol In all my rigs. One I put a modified rebuilt chevy engine in that I rebuilt. It went in my 64 CJ5. After 10 years of very unreal heavy abuse in the rocky mountains I pulled the pan. I had over built the oil pump and except for idling the needle was off a 80 Lb gauge. I pulled the pan to correct this cause the engine started seeping out the main seals. 10 years of Castrol and that engine looked like it didn't have a mile on it. I use Mobil 1 Syn now but I have nothing bad to say about Castrol

Message: Bob, i can't explain why, all i know is Fram filters caused that slight tick on a cold start on two different manufactuers vehicles that i have had. as soon as i changed the filter, the tick was gone.
as far as Castrol, i'm glad you guys have had great service from it. as i stated before, it was my opinion/ experience. i know there are probably people out there that have had problems with Valvoline too.

Message: other then the trouble stated in the past about fram filters they are also very restrictive
i seen some test results awhile back and fram showed a noticeable drop in oil pressure and they rated very low K&N and Wix came out on top
if you cant find a local place that carries wix
your local Napa - Napa gold series oil filters are made by wix

Message: The relief valve in the fram filter was bad when plastic . I'm being told that valve is now cardboard. I haven't checked one to be sure. Regardless, plastic or cardboard your lucky if the valve functions for 1000 miles if at all. This is what causes drain back. Look inside te filter you buy. The bottom will be shiny metal if the filter is a descent one.
