Subject: Bearing Change Questions IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 2WD Dakota and I need to replace the front right wheel bearing (it's howling). From reading this board, it appears that I can just press out the bearing from the hub. (I have access to a hydraulic press)
I have a few questions for anyone thats done this:
Are the Timken bearings sold by Autozone satisfactory, or do I have to get them from the dealer?
Best way to pull hub from spindle? Do I need to get a slide hammer? Gear puller? Big ass hammer?
Should I replace the big hub nut? Torque values?
These are probably pretty common questions, sorry for my newbness.
Thanks

Message: all haynes manual would do is tell you to change the whole hub.
Timken bearings used to be a quality bearing. i would hope they still are. this could be the correct Timken p/n for a '97 JRM4249A. not sure. that's from a very old post.
as far as pulling the hub from the spindle. according to the '02 FSM it should just sldie off. HA HA. a gear puller or slide hammer should do the trick. it also states NOT to reuse the nut but, i've read on here where somme have. that's enitrely up to you. myself, i'd replace it. Torque it to 185 ft lbs.
