Subject: Fuel gauge turns off and on

I'm having problems with my fuel gauge.

- Sometimes the fuel gauge turns off and on repeatedly when stopped, and seems to work fine after you start driving.

- Sometimes the fuel gauge turns off when stopped, and turns back on after you start driving.

This problem comes up more often and often now, and sometimes it will completely turn off even when driving, until I restart the truck.

Also, it will happen when the fuel level is closer to half-empty, and happens more often the less fuel there is in the tank. Otherwise, the fuel gauge works properly when it's on.

What do you think the problem is? Truck is a 97 Dakota, 3.9L, RWD, auto.

Maybe the sending unit inside the tank might be ready take a sh!t or fuel pump for the same might also have poor connection not fully secured or losing contact with sending unit. Never leave out something haywire in dash might be doing the same these day in ages are instrument clusters are circuit board appear mechanical on the outside but circuit board powering it... Good Luck...

Got the exact same problem, just haven't had the chance to do any investigating. I've got 160k plus on the truck. If I get a chance to figure it out before you do, I'll be sure to post about it.
