Subject: 87 3.9l Choking to death IP: Logged
Message: Here is the situation: I have a 1987 3.9L with a rebuilt carb on it. When I start the vehicle from cold, I choke it and it starts fine. However, after I get in gear and then push in the clutch to, say, come to a stop, it sputters and dies. It smells strongly of gas. Sometimes holding the pedal to the floor will help it restart, and others I just have to let it sit. It did this problem twice about a month ago, took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong, they told me to put gas in it (it had about 1/8th of a tank left...) and then it ran fine for about a month. Yesterday it started up again and it is now sitting in the parking lot and will not start. This problem does not happen if it has been warmed up, as far as I can tell.
2 questions: Am I correct in believing that the choke is at fault here, or could it be something else?
Also, is there a way to disable the choke (if it is the culprit) for now? I have to drive it quite a distance tomorrow, and since it's the holiday I can't get anyone to look at it beforehand.
Thank you much!
