Subject: Ram Air Intake IP: Logged
Message: Has anybody ever found a true ram air system for the 3.9L Dakotas, or any dakota for that matter? I've looked at the so called "cold air intakes", but if you drive any gravel or dirty enviroments at all your subject to the elements, and not to mention its sucking in the warm air from the engine, and not true cold air. In my eyes the only way to get true cold air system is to install a ram air system. Unfortunately I have yet to find one for my truck. Any help would be appreciated.

Message: As far as I know none exist as a bolt-on, so what does that mean? You do it old school and Make a custom Ram-Air for it

Message: You can get a shaker hood.
Unless you are going 80-90 mph there is no measurable ram air effect. It is also more "subject to the elements" than most CAI's. The difference in temperature is also negligable. I've spent a good deal of time measuring intake temps on various systems. The factory system gets its air from the fender well opening and that air only runs about 10-15 degrees warmer than the outside air temp. Most "so-called" CAI take their air from the very same place. Dropping the intake air temp fifteen degrees with net you about 1hp.
Bottom line is the factory system is pretty good and will provide far more air than you can possibly use in any v6.

Message: Thanks for the info. I did find a ram air system Suncoast Automotive that is the hood, and air box kit which would cost close to $1500 or more by the time it gets to my house and painted. I can do alot of engine mods for that price.
So Instead I think I'll get a Fastman Throttle Body, and later on a superchips programmer.

Message: I bought a Ram_Air hood and installed it. I bought the Ram Air kit, but it will not work with the 3.9. It is designed for the 5.2s and 5.9s. Thanks.

Message: It comes with a 14" filter & element, the 3.9 will only accomidate up to a 10" because of how the motor sets back further. Also, the figerglass piece that seals off the hood to the intake is too large for the 3.9. It interferes with the thermostat water hose. You probably could modify it, but I will just wait until I get the 318 or 360 for my truck.

Message: why not just buy a scoop and have some custom air duct work done to form a good barrier around the filter to push/funnel the air?

Message: Yeah the ram air hood from Suncoast Creations is really nice but pretty heavy on the pocket book i was sure i was gonna get one for my '01 Dak (3.9L) but again as others have stated and have guided me, I can do many other mods that will do the job for that price or less.

Message: Yes but ram is the best naturaly asperated intake
setup
I like mine with the hood scoop it makes a very
noticeable differance on my truck
Its raming down a 14x3 K&N with a K&N exstream
14" top the direct ram hits right on top the
air cleaner and presurizes the incloser sealed
from ant under hood air
IAT is located in the bottom 6" from throtlle body
picking up the engine heat I can run this sensor
down to 0 degrees with the sponge blocks in the
scoop blocking water and snow I open 2 sides
of the inclser and run under hood reg top on air
cleaner down to 40 below I have run this
They say 1 pound boost at 100 miles per hour
with a ram
would it be 1/2 at 50mph 3/4 at 75mph
I can change the top from the open to close
and feel the diff
with the open top around 50 55 it picks up so
does it work that way or is it just the true cold
air, I don't know but it works for me aand I like
it
Still hanging around 23.5 24mpg
1995 4x4
all the boltons and mods
gasket match intake devider removed stock port
length
Jet 2 chip
Venom 400
The Venom 400 actualy works well on the moded
motors espesialy with the O/D and lockup letting
them run out a lot higher very noticeable gains
from 2500rpm to redline watching the advance it
gained 3 to 5 degrees advance at 1/2 3/4 throttle
Helps a lot I never tried one befor but python
injection has gone back and redone there line
for the obd1 trucks and made the chips more
motor specific so I thought I would try one
one day on the phone with python the tech was
telling me about this so I ordered one to test
V48-612
he v48-555 used to cover all the 94 95 dodge
motors V6, 318, 360 the 318 one is a v48-615
All dyno tested and tweaked now works well with
my stage 2 chip great for passing cars on high way
just push throttle until light comes on and your
in 3rd and can excellerate nice 1/4 1/2 3/4
throttle and it will stay in 3rd that alone is
a very nice thing

Message: I would suggest that if anybody gets one of the same ram-air hoods as me to get one for the 4.7. The 4.7 uses a ram-air setup that locates where the stock air-box is. I did not realize this until after I bought mine.
