Subject: 3.9 overheated after I shut it off IP: Logged
Message: I have a 93 Dakota 4x4 3.9 V6.
Today it overheated after I shut it off in the parking lot at work.
Before that, I changed the oil today, and I ran it on the highway and did 90 a few times(previously I haven't ran it that hard on the highway). I believe it was fine while driving. What would cause it to over heat after parking?
I will check it again after the ride home tonight to make sure it isn't doing it the whole time, but there was no trail in the parking lot, just a puddle when I came out.

Message: called heat soak.... when a motor is not running its takes longer to cool off but when you have an overheated motor and you shut it down the temp will keep climbing to certain point when block temp and coolant temp reach an equal limit... then in due time it will cool off back down to a normal temp.... thats why most cars or trucks will have an electric fan that operated by a relay which is controlled by a coolant temp sensor to run the fan as the vehicle is turned off so that it will aid in cooling the motor and coolant....

Message: IIRC there isn't an electric fan on his truck.
I would replace the radiator cap, as it looks
like it has gone south and cannot hold the
required pressuer.

Message: Maybe you should check the coolant level as well as the radiator cap, I've seen that happen on different cars before and I think the reason its fine while running is because its cooling and circulating the coolant and actually keeping the temp down then when you shut it off it boils.
Another thing to check is the radiator hoses, if they are soft you might want to replace them, I have seen some hoses on the bottom colapse and cause over heating in cases like that, while that is unlikely, just something to check.

Message: I always replace the radiator cap when I purchase a car. They
wear out. I have had a couple of vehicles that I could hear
boiling in the overflow tank after shutting the engine off.
Replacing the cap took care of it. It's worth a try.

Message: I have the same problem. Replaced a leaking waterpump, put in a 160 degree new thermostat, replaced the radiator cap, flushed and back flushed the system. It takes longer than before to overheat, about 15 minutes vs 10.
checked engine compression, got 145,150,140,140,120,and 110.
Need help

What cylinders were those?
I suspect that is your culprit right there.
