Subject: Rear Speed Sensor IP: Logged
Message: A while back I posted about the following problems: ABS light "on", Brake light "on", speedo not working under 30mph. Someone from this forum mentioned the rear speed sensor (mounted on top of rear differentisl) as the likely culprit. I got under the truck and it seems to be an easy enough job for me to tackle. Does anyone know the p/n of the rear speed sensor...and what is the process of replacing out the old one? Thanks

Message: i had that problem on my 89 if you go to a dealer they can tell you the part number then go to o riely's on mine though it was the abs valve on the driver side frame rail that was the problem after i put in the sensor so you best bet is to have the shop run a test on it first cuz i spent 500$ trying to fix it

RE: ABS and BRAKE light on -- everyone with the abs and brake light on, and some with no low range speedo as well has changed their rear abs speed sensor. the one in the rear diff
Message:
just did rear abs sensor - problem solved, some hints for a 99 dak
- day before spray nut with wd40 or liquid wrench
- drive rear wheels up ramps (or steep driveway, helps keep diff fluid from leaking out, also chock wheels!)
- disconnect neg battery teminal
- top nut 13 MM use box wrench
- bottom nut 14 MM use box wrench
- press connector with thumb and pull connector off sensor
- wiggle sensor up, put screw driver under lip and wiggle to raise (carefully)
- dip finger in hole and put diff oil on new O ring on sensor
- push sensor in and bolt up (also, use dielectric grease for the wire connector)
- put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds
- reconnect battery
you're done

Note: Check the wrench sizes, I've seen that some people use 1/2" and 9/16" (which are close to 13mm and 14mm). Not sure if the nuts are metric or not.

Message: Yup...this forum is filled with alot of expert folks who know the dak. I bought the part for like 30 bucks and it took no more than 20 minutes to swap out. If I had taken it to a shop I bet they'da charged me 200 bucks or so...plus that friggin 30 or so bucks for "shop supplies"...what gives with that? Anyway, problemo solved. BIG thanks to all who help out in this forum.
Olindo.

Message: The ABS and Brake light coupled with the speedo inoperable are the same symptoms I had. I replaced the rear speed sensor and problem gone. Now I'm no expert, but the check engine light and shifting problem sounds similar to a problem I had a year and a half ago...it turned out to be the output speed sensor that's mounted on the side of the trani case. Can anyone confirm this?
