94' 5 speed 180k+ miles

Just recently truck developed a problem with a slight stuttering around 2000RPM and completely falls on it's face on hard acceleration at about 3700RPM, almost like a rev limiter kicked in. Poking around I found a bad EGR valve. Replaced with a new one, problem still present. Plugs look good, less then 5K all slightly white/tan, I'd say slightly lean. I then installed a new cap (slight wear on old one), and o2 ( from what others recommended), can't find any vacuum leaks. Also just replaced fuel pump about 12k miles ago but haven't verified pressure since I don't have a guage. Looked over injectors, they all ohmed out the same and don't feel there is a problem there, also because all of the plugs looked near identical.

Everything seems to be pointing me to a fuel problem, but nothing adds up. Cat makes a slight rattle, but has been that way for at least 40k+.

Maybe I should drop the cat or pull the 02 and see if problem is still present, rule out a slightly plugged up cat.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks..

well considering year and miles
it could be a long list of things
so what you need to do is check for codes
dont go guessing and throwing money at it

Is it the cat rattling probably pluging up

check it out

new cat and o2 sensors can make a world of diff

Your plugs should be a light tan color

with that many miles I would think very seriosly
about replacing the timing chain and gears and
a new tensioner

just some sugestions as someone already said with
that many miles could be just about anything

Thanks for the suggestions.

There aren't any codes that come up. Upon looking closer at things I found out there was a bad connection going to the fuel pump, so bumps would cause odd things to happen. Seemed to help out, checking into the cat problem now, probably drop exhaust and see if things get better.

As far as timing chain, anyone know if this is a free running motor? I'm under the assumption that it is, so if my timing chain was to break I'd only be stuck walking/tow without damage to the pistons maybe valves from smacking once the chain breaks.

Good thing is that the timing chain replacements don't look to involved as far as an engine pull.

thanks again guys..

It's common for a cat that is plugging up to back up exhaust gases into the EGR and even melt it. So if you find a bad cat, you may have to replace the EGR again. That's the scenario my brother had when he initially owned my truck. Timing chain usually wears noticeably around 100K miles on these engines. If yours is original, change it soon.

they are not "Free running"
if the timing chain slips your going to put valves into the pistons, bend push rods & possibly more

Follow-up.
Thanks for all the help guys..

Bad / plugged cat.

Cut the cat apart and noticed all the lose pieces inside, the rattle was the give away I guess. It has had the rattle for over 50K, but everything inside finally became small enough to wedge sideways causing the clogging effect.

Also put in a new timing chain set & tensioner as recommended. Wasn't as bad as I though it would be. Taking the radiator out made things easier to work on, rather then leaving it in as mentioned in the "How-To". "How-To" was great for the parts list.

Hopefully I'll be good till it hits 350K..
