Subject: 98 tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I own a 98 dak 3.9, with 93,500 miles. The tranny seems to drop out of drive & shifts erratically. The engine revs to about 3,000 rpm's when it does this. The problem just started Friday. I was on my way to camp, about 30 mi. away. It started to act up about half way there. On the return trip, it ran fine for about 15 miles then started to act up again. I checked the fluid, it's fine with good color. I can hear a hissing sound from under the hood. Is there a vacuuum line somewhere to the tranny? I looked, can't fine anything. If anyone has any ideas, I'd sure appreciate it.

Message: Well, I dropped the truck off at a local tranny shop this a.m. They ran various pressure tests etc. They could not find the problem, everything checks out ok, not even a code showed up. The mechanic even drove it. Does anyone know what could cause an intermittent tranny problem like this? Thank.

Message: A vac leak can cause the RE trans to act up
the gov pressure is computer controled by
load (vac map sensor) throttle position, road
speed engine rpm and gear selection
This is all done by 2 things in the trans
a pressure sensor and a solonoid you may have
one going bad
First thing to do here is clean all electrical
conecctions to the trans
drivers side by shift levers you will find a
plug on trans and follow the wires back some
of the obd2 trucks also had another conector
in the line depending on options
clean with carb or brake clean blow out with
air or let dry than fill with dielectric grease
and plug back togather
The grease will keep any water from getting in
If you do a filter and fluid change be sure you
use good fluid no dextron or supertech from walmart
We use only 3 fluids in the dodge transmissions
ATF +3 or +4
Amsoil universal synthetic
Red line synthetic
The pressure sensor and sol is a very common
problem on the OBD2 RE Transmissions

Message: Thanx Larry. I also noticed last nite that the speedo seems to be acting a little weird. Would a bad tps have anything to do with this? I've heard that it won't throw a code even if it's bad.

Message: Larry, where is the pressure sensor & solonoid that u posted about located? Is it inside the pan? I have a cose p0720, speed sensor circuit. I plan on replacing the sensor, but I'd like to do the others also.
