Subject: Electric Fan Install IP: Logged
Message: Larry, Okay, got the fan, let's see if I got this right. Fan came set up as a puller motor behind the fan, fan blades closest to the radiator. The instructions say remove shroud and mount onto radiator with ties. You said leave the shroud in. Shroud seems in the way for working and makes it hard to attach to the radiator. Did you attach fan somehow to the shroud. When you say 1" back I'm assuming that's from the radiator. Guess I'm not reading your directions well.

Message: Yes make 4 brackets and attach to fan shrod
DO NOT USE the plastic ties and mount to rad
Most fans come to be put on the rad bad idea
I will try to explain better
The way they tell you the blade wound be against
rad and motor sticking back
Mount with brackets to shroud with blade towards
engine fan motor sticking towards front of truck
you will need to flip fan blade over on motor
keep blade about 1" back from round opening off
shroud this will cause the flow to pull across
the entire rad center as best you can
All you should see after installed is the blade
about 1" back in the round hole of the shroud
Now just be sure it draws in from front of truck
the motors are reversible when you flip it around
you must also flip blade
bolt into shrod with brackets 1/4 bolts flat and
lock washers where it goes on shroud and some blue
locktight
now just bolt shroud back in and wire
A nice clean looking instalation
I have seen many mounted with the straps they
brake and it will chop up the rad they do not
hold up
just some heavy sheat metal brackets is all you
need 1 bolt threw shroud and 1 in fan each bracket
bend on angle to shroud and out to fan

Message: Thanks, Larry. I get it now. Makes sense to get a better draw through the entire radiator.

Message: I got my fan installed this evening. Works like a champ. If you're truck's running hot though, the first thing I'd do is swap in a 180 degree thermostat. Found a Stant Superstat for 7 bucks locally. If you DO get the fan, be prepared to pay 200+ for a good setup... BUT you get some horsepower back and gain around 2 MPG fuel economy, so it gradually pays for itself in fuel savings.
Start with the thermostat though. Make sure you get the gasket surfaces cleaned up, apply a thin layer of blue RTV sealent with your finger to both sides of a new gasket, let it get tacky, then install your thermostat. Make SURE not to tighten your thermostat housing beyond 200 inch/lbs, or you may have it leak though.
As far as justifying the purchase, ask if she'd rather you keep the truck healthy enough to drive, or have you take her vehicle to work and make her walk? haha
Good luck!

Message: Larry/J&J Auto, you may want to pass along that the new BM 150s that are shipping don't have to be flipped around as you described. The one I installed tonight had the back of the fan motor pointing toward the square side, and fan pointing toward the round side. Simply mounted it so that the front of the fan was 1 inch inside the factory shroud opening, wired it up and off I went.
Blowing and Going! haha

Message: At 2mpg savings thats about $20,000.00 a year so that $200.00 seems to be a good investment. I got excited though I have to get mine runnin first. Why did they put that stupid distributor there? I'm probably gonna get my leg stuck crwlin around on top of that motor and the fire department will have to get me out and they don't like me much for burnin limbs and s#*@ so they'll take pictures and in the paper it goes and it's one of those days.

Message: I like to use the permacool 16" or 18" 2950cfm
fan at $100 flexolite thermo switch $35 and you
need a 30 amp relay $6 some wire V6 ONLY
noy big enoughg for V8's 4000cfm plus V8
The fan and switch come with wire diagrams
Take your shrould off lay on floor now hold the
permacool fan blade towards you dead center or
close with the blade resesed 1" from the lip
of the shroud
round opening up towards you
now just make 4 simple sheet metal brackets to
mount the fan where your now holding it
reinstall your shroud with fan bolted in and
wire it

Message: Thanks Larry
I understand the install now.
How about the wiring up part of it? How hard is that part of it? That's the part of it that makes me nervous.(& the fact I'm color-blind)
I have a '00
Do I just remove the stock fan and the stock electric fan or do I leave in the stock electric fan for the A/C.
Thanks again...........Gears
