Message: Try checking the map sensor vacuum line at the map sensor and the other end into the control box. I had a similar problem and also check the PCV valve hose. You don't know if it is cracked until you take it off.

Message: Go old fashioned. Do a compression leak test.
When my 3.9 missed, I wasted money for an un-needed injector and some other things, when the problem was leaky valves, which can cause backfiring and blow out an expensive catalytic converter.

Message: Did you guys ever solve this one? My '98 has exactly the same issues! Starts OK (although it cranks a bit longer than expected when cold) then runs great until up to temp, then sputters and backfires for a few miles, then runs great again! I've replaced every sensor. Can it possibly be an exhaust manifold leak? I've detected one on the passenger side... Could that be it? How could the fuel system be at fault (i.e. cause it to backfire etc.) that would seem to be timing, no?
Thanks, Desperate Dave

Message: I have 2001 Dakota 3.9 litre, and experiencing exactly the same - runs fine when cold, drive for a while and turn off - when restarting - misfires, sputters and lacks power until you floor it for a few seconds. Changed plugs, wires, and even the whole fuel pump to no avail. Someone out there must have solved this???

Message: Vehicle:
1998 Dodge Dakota V6 4x4 (all stock) - 147,700 miles
Issue:
Similar to this post, stumbling, random cut out of engine, intermittent loss of power, with random P0351 codes *no MIL light*
Parts Replaced:
*Plugs, wires, cap and rotor*
[2] Catalytic Converters
[2] O2 sensors (upstream and downstream)
[1] Throttle Position Sensor
[1] Air Idle Control Valve
[1] Ignition Coil
[1] Crankshaft Position Sensor
Garage costs totalled $1,400 over the course of 5 months - no one had a clue.
Cause:
PCM circuit board was cracked. Had the PCM replaced.
*NOTE*
Another possible cause for this year truck is the ASD system. For the '98 it's the Dark Green wire #10 on middle plug into the PCM, this is labeled on wiring schematics as "Gen Field Drv" this wire leads to the ASD relay. A loose connection of the ASD wire can cause stumbling and/or cause the engine to cut-out. Also, a good idea to check the ASD relay.
Hopefully this post may help someone else out and save them a bit of $$$.

Message: so the PCM could cause a backfiring noise from
within the engine bay? this is driving me crazy,
spent a crap load of money on it and dealerships
can't even figure it out. If I let the truck sit
for almost any length of period of time it will
act like it is being bogged down like crazy until
it has back fired within the engine bay several
times and then it will drive like normal but
never reach operating temp.

Message: Hey, I have a 98 with the 3.9 auto and it seems to have a similar problem but takes it a little further... Starts up ok, drives fine for the first few miles, then STOPS in the middle of traffic while driving. Engine just turns off!!! I put it in park, turn off the ignition then restart it and its ok for a few miles and does it again. Dealer charger a few thousand $$ for a new computer, cat coverter and diag and did absolutely nothing. I've changed nearly every sensor a human can get to, all new plugs, wires, coil, cap/rotor, vacuum lines, etc. Mechanics won't even look at it anymore because they say I've tried everything. Kicks out no codes. The truck is in really great shape except for this prob and I don't think our nearby lake is deep enough to sink it... any ideas?? Thanks!
