Message: I'm getting ready to rebuild my 92 3.9 V6. While at Autozone I asked for the proper size plastigage for this. The clerk looked it up and said there were three different kinds available. Red, Green, and Blue. They couldnt tell me which was used for what. Which is the proper plastigage to use for the mains, rods, etc... I Have a rebuild maual but it only says to use the proper plastigage for the appropriate piece.

Message: When I rebuilt mine, an 88, I used the 1-3 thousants I think it was green, it will say on the package what size it is. when I rebuild an engine I like to have about .0015 inch clearence, but the manual calls for I think.0009-.0025, but in a new engine I think that is a little too much (.0025) unless you are going to race it.
Just my opinion. Good luck,

Message: different components require different clearances. i.e., rod bearings, main bearings. check your rebuild manual for the clearances required then buy the apropriate plasti-gage. it's been quite a while since i've used it so i can't teel exactly which you need to buy but, it should state the range of each on the packages.
