 Subject: Oil Pressure Gauge Low

When I turn my truck on the needle for the oil pressure goes to it's normal halfway mark, however, when the truck warms up and I am at an idle, the needle moves close the quarter mark and stays there. When I accelerate the needle moves back to the normal halfway mark. People told me that it could be the oil pressure sensor. I bought the oil pressure switch because there is not a such thing as an oil pressure sensor per the dealership. Any ideas?

first thing you want to do is pull the sending unit and attach a mechanical gauge to see if it really is low pressure or just a bad sending unit
an you want to do this ASAP
because if you do have low oil pressure
your going to ruin the motor running it

what you're describing to me sounds like normal indication on the gage. best thing to do is what "well" suggested and put a mechanical gage on there to check. if memory serves me right, pressures should be: min. 6psi @ idle, engine warm, max 60psi @ 3k rpm, engine warm.

what is the sending unit and does anyone have a diagram of the engine and where everything goes. This mechanical device, where can I get that, or do I have to take it to a mechanic shop?

the sending unit converts the oil pressure to an electrical signal for the gage to read. it's located on the back of the engine next to the distributor shaft.
you can pick up a mechanical gage at any parts house.

year of truck? oil pressure sensor unit is found behind the TBI/carb/ w/e u have on ur truck a lil towards the passenger side of the truck. has 2/3 wires on the top leading towards the firewall and should have a clip to remove the wires with. should b able to take it off with a tool at the auto store. def check the pressure be4 u buy a new one tho. theyre only liek 15 bucks mayb less but u might have a bigger problem agreed with the people posting be4 me.

They lose oil pressure at idle after they warm up because the oil thins out a little bit. I switched to a 160 thermostat and it does not do this anymore. Mine runs 80 psi constanstly, might dip down to 70 at idle.

Thanks for all your responses. I am going to go and get an oil pressure gauge to check. Shoe, thanks for the idea. I might do that next. How can I tell what temperature rating my thermostat is? Should I just ask at the auto store.
My truck is a 2001 dodge dakota v6.

If you havnt changed out the thermostat yet yourself it should be a 195 degree. most people switch it out to a 180 degree thermostat because the engine needs at least 170degrees to warm up or it will throw a trouble code. Cause your computer to rub on set tables to try and warm up giving you bad GAS MILEAGE. For whatever reason Shoe has stated in past posts that he hasnt had a problem with the 160degree thermostat, so the 160 works for him, i tried the 160degree thermostat and it doesnt work for me.
