Message: 2002 dakota sport 3.9 2wd
i've been having a noise in my front end for a little while but thought it was just my shocks. i had an s-10 once and got the same noise from those shocks. it was where the shocks bolted onto the a-arm, it would slide back and forth on the bracket that mounts it, really annoying!!! i'm getting that same noise with my dakota but i replaced the shocks and they ARE NOT sliding back and forth on the bracket and nothing else is loose, checked it all out.
the noise comes whenever i drive over uneven road surfaces or cracks and it doesn't have to be anykind of big bump, it happens even if the shocks dont compress. it sounds like something is going to fall off, like loose bolts on the left and right sides somewhere down at both wheels.
tonight i was pumping gas and kicked my front tire and what do you know, the noise was there, same noise i've been hearing inside the cab when my windows are open. i hit the tire some more and tried to locate this noise. the best i can come up with so far is something from the brake caliper and brakes, that's where it sounds like most of the rattling is coming from but i just can tell. don't think it would be the hub while the weight of the truck is on the wheels. when i turn the steering wheel sharp left or right and hit the wheel the noise barely is even noticeable. also when i'm driving and i put the brakes on just even slightly the noise will not duplicate. whatever it is, vibration through the tire is what is bringing it on and transfering it to the next closet thing (caliper and brake assembly) in my opinion.
Are there any known problems with these calipers and brakes along with the clips they use to hold the outer pads to the caliper? i think the noises might be coming from them. if anyone had heard or gone through this i'm curious as to what you did to get rid of this chatter like noise. it's very annoying and slightly embarrassing. my truck is nice and well kept and the dam front end sounds like it's gonna fall off! thanks everyone

Message: Could very well be that someone stripped out the caliper bolts and ran a different bolt through the hole. It would be worth taking the tire off and looking at the caliper. Kicking the tire on the truck and being able to make a noise limits what can be the problem, as you stated because everything is under the load of the truck. The caliper isn't going to be under any kind of load unless the piston is stuck or the brakes are on.

Message: i had the truck from brand new and no work has been done to the front end. i've had calipers off already to re-grease the caliper sliders. the bolts are not stripped out. i thought they were hanging up one other time before when i had smelled burning brake smell very bad and was actually holding the truck back slightly. it has not happened since re-greasing them. do you think they could be too much grease, don't see how that would make them rattle though! they seemed very dry when i took them off even for being greased from factory. i just don't like that whole clip set up that holds the outer side of the caliper on, seems like it's just begging for noise problems. i've still not yet pin pointed this. somedays are worse than others with the worse days being when it's warmer. very strange!!

Message: Worse when it gets warmer...that's an odd one. The only other thing I could think that could cause noises like that would be the link between the sway bar and the lower control arm being loose. Temperature might be a factor in the shape the sway bar takes depending on how much the deflection of the sway bar changes based on ambient temperatures ( this being pure conjecture, I have nothing to base this on )

Message: How about the sway arm bushings NAPA sells them
or you can go to energysuspention.com mesure
and order polyurathain
Yes there was an issue on the right a arm bushings
going bad and rattling
Another issue was the stearing shaft rattle trew
the stearing colum check those joints also

Message: i found the problem guys! both left wheel and right wheel inner brake pads are loose inside the caliper. not loose like they are going to fall out. the piston is not pushing against them to keep them tight onto the rotor. this is where the rattling is coming from. i have not replaced these pads yet, they are still factory at 71,000 miles and they still look like they got a good half inch on them yet. i do mostly all highway driving. thing that surprises me is there are no squeelers on these pads. only way to know when to replace them is buy looking at them i guess or in my case they start to rattle. i'm guessing there is not enough thickness anymore to make up for that little bit of space between the pad and the piston. we're talking maybe 1mm but it's enough to make this annoying noise i'm talking about. I don't understand why the piston would extend further when applying the brakes but then recede back enough to make a gap between the piston and the pad. why wouldn't the piston stay at the last point of extension? this would explain why the noise goes away when i apply the brakes but comes back when i let off. i'm sure there is enough pad there yet by the looks of it so i hope it can wait a little bit till i round up some cash. i'll just have to put up with the noise. i hope the calipers aren't bad either. i just think it would be kind of odd that both calipers went bad and they both were doing the same thing. seems like a travel limit thing with the pistons and not enough meat on the pads to make up for it. for the record, the calipers are sliding freely on the sliders.
Yeah Larry, i think i have that thing in my steering column too. Is it inside the cab or outside in the engine area? it happens everytime i go over a bump and it comes from inside the steering column cover where the flasher switch is. it sounds like something with the tilt steering mechanism or something in that area on the lower part that faces your knees. it's real annoying but this brake noise is worse, probly cause i've been dwelling on it trying to find it.
