Subject: Removing the A/C pulley
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1993 dodge dakota v6 auto . The bearing in the electro-mechanical clutch on the end of the A/C compressor is making a lot of noise . I can get the nut off okay . I just want to make sure that all I do is pull it straight off .AFter unpluging first . I removed the belt and gave it a spin and it sounds rough . Of course when the a/c kicks in the noise goes away .

Too much nonsense! I recently removed these parts to clean and repaint the compressor, this service is still fresh in my mind. Once you have removed the nut, use a harmonic balancer puller with 3 bolts to separate the outer clutch plate. Next use snap ring pliers to remove the pulley retaining snap ring. The next step depends on how bad the bearing is. I think you are supposed to use a 3 jaw puller to remove the pulley; I used 2 flat blade screwdrivers and worked the pulley off the shaft. I you do this do not pry on the metal backing for the electromagnet, this can damage it, probably why the puller is the best choice. Now with these parts out you can either replace the bearing or replace them with remanufactured parts. Hope this helps.
