Hey...The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT just came on. The truck is idling poorly and will even go dead. At a stop sign/stoplight, I either have to hold the brake and gas at same time or put in neutral. Plugs/cables have been changed. No misfiring, cranks up IMMEDIATELY with no trouble. I read a few posts similar to this one and it seems a hard puppy to diagnose. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

year of truck would help. with the check engine light on, first thing to do is find out what codes are present.

disregard my request for year on my earlier post. you do need to find out what codes are present though. judging by symptoms you gave and year, it may be the EGR valve. but, so you don't waste money throwing parts at it, you need to get the codes. that's the reason they put that CEL in there in the first place.

I did the ignition key ON,OFF thingy. I got 32 flashes. Checked a code site and it says EGR system.

there you go. i'd check it to see if it's working properly. a Haynes or Chilton repair manual may have the procedure of how to test it. while you're at it you may try to clean the EGr passages in the manifold.

aint even worth farting with an egr valve that old
just replace it, clean the ports in the intake first
the engine will run better and improve mpg's a bit too
