Subject: My driveshaft Fell Off!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I was driving down I-70 about 70mph and my driveshaft disconnected from the differential. It obviously hit the road and made driving difficult, luckily the median was big enough for me to pull off onto it.

Anyway, It started making a noise when I would let off of the gas yesterday; I thought it was just my exhaust since it had a hole in it. I got about 100 miles away from my house; was driving regularly and then it just fell off.

The driveshaft is still connected to the U-Joints, all bolts intact. And the U-Joint is connected to a Flange. Then the flange slides over the pinion and is locked in place somehow by some gear type grooves?

Questions:
Has anybody ever had a driveshaft just disconnect and fall down for no reason?

How much does this cost to fix?

Is it under the 100k powertrain warranty?

I had my tranny replace a month ago; Could this be the fault of somebodies poor installation?

Any information is greatly appreciated. I don't know how something like this happens.

Basically, the driveshaft is still bolted to the flange, but the flange came off of the pinion at the differential.

So it looks like this:

...____
--/____ <----that's the differential with the pinion sticking out towards the front of the truck.

I would have pictures, but the truck has been towed to a shop/.

You never mentioned the year of your truck. That flange is held on with bolts. this is most likely to happen when the drive shaft has been removed to replace u-joints. the bolts were not reinstalled properly. Myself, on critical applications like this I use loctite for extra insurance.

2002 Dakota v6 Sport 5 speed.

I had a new tranny put in a month ago....the flange was still bolted to the U-Joint of the driveshaft.

Is the flange connected to the differential? Or does it sorta just connect to the pinion?

Because if the flange is welded onto the differential, then the welds broke. If the Flange is bolted onto the differential, then a part must've fallen off when the driveshaft came off, because I don't see how the flange connected to the differential.

Picture would be nice. Going with a reasonable guess, The flange should be on the differential and the drive shaft has a spline slip yoke that fits to the tranny. Never seen one that wasn't this way.

I won't have a picture, the truck is already at the dealership. I was about 100 miles away from home when it broke off.

However, here is how it's connected right now (broken):

tranny > driveshaft > u-joint > yoke > Nothing attached to yoke

Then on drive shaft (from front of truck to rear) pinion > gear/bolt (like 3/4 thick) > differential cover

I'm not exactly sure what a flange is, I thought it was the yoke. Are they one in the same?

Basically My yoke is the part that was dragging on the ground, the guy at Autozone told me that it was possible for my driveshaft to just slip off of the pinion if it was installed incorrectly. IE: Not being put far enough onto the gear that goes around the pinion.

Any ideas? I'm really trying to do my best to describe it, I hope it is covered under the powertrain warranty. So far I've had my balljoints fail (while driving), my rear drivers side lug studs sheer off (while driving), 2 transmission replacements and now this driveshaft problem.

I think all of my problems are stemming from the original balljoint failure and the poor workmanship of my local dodge dealership.

Been thinking and I'm convinced who ever did your tranny screwed up installing your drive shaft. I hope you took the truck to the same place cause I'm convinced this was there fault. If not take the repair bill to show them. Doubt they will pay it but you might get lucky.
