Message: Robertshaw is NOT out of business. They are owned by Invensys, and have sold off the automotive thermostats, but still make home thermostats. Cooper-Standard now has the old Robertshaw line.

Message: Bob Lincoln..... Thank you You are absolutely correct. General standard now has the Robert shaw pellet thermostat guaranteed dead on with-in 4 degrees and a life time warranty. Somewhat high priced at $20.00 but well worth the price. I will be ordering 2 of these for my vans. Got one in my Dakota. Thank you again for the dead on information.

Message: I used to work for a company that was also bought by the evil empire Invensys, so I was aware of what happened. Robertshaw was OEM for Chrysler and the dealers carried them even a few years ago. I think they're the best. I had a defective new Stant thermostat in my Dak, still gave me code 17. Can't believe how many bad new ones are out there.

Message: The origanal 195 thermo in these motors is a
metered flow design
Using a full flow 180 it will run below 170 and
trip a code running to cold to long unless you
live where its always warm a bad idea to use any
of the full flow 180's
The reg stant 195 will run 183 185 in these motors
The robert shaw # was GT775 autozone did not list
them but used to carrie them out on the shelf in
there stores
There also used to be metered 180's but they
quit making them
Mopar techs say the computers make there best
power and gas mileage between 180 185
I am running a reg stant 195 it runs a perfect
183 185 the elect fan is set to come on at 188
and shut back off at 185 and I am getting 24.5
mpg 1995 4x4 all the mods and bolt ons and a jet
stage 2 chip
I tested every 180 out there and they all ran
cold in the V6 motors

Message: Larry is dead on with his evaluations of the 180 degree t-stats. I put a 180 in my 92 V6 and it would never warm up, even with the radiator partially blocked off. Still got the code 17, too. So, I put in a 195.
Now, his explanation of the Stant 195 degree unit explains why my truck runs cooler now and puts out less heat in the cab than with the old 195, which was OEM.
Thanks, Larry!

Message: Thermostat being a few degrees cooler does NOT make it put out less heat. Once the thermostat is open, the flow is the same. Try reverse flushing your heater core.

Tell ya what-take out your t-stat, that gives full flow. Tell me how well your heater works.

Message: 180 degree water will deliver less heat than 195 degree water.
If the engine does not come up to full operating temp the heater cannot deliver the proper heat, no matter what thermostat is installed. Full flow is full flow whenever the stat is fully open or removed. If the water isn't warm, you aren't, either.
With a 180 stat I get a code 17 and no heat to speak of.

Message: I went to Autozone yesterday abd asked about the ststs. They has several to choose from. One was a 195 "high heat" and one was a 195 OEM. The OEM had a small passage way hole off to one side with what I would call a regulator or a metering rod that would allow coolant to pass through some before the actual thermostat opened up. I assumed that this is what everyone was talking about, so that is the one I bought. Nither one of the three guys there has any idea what a metered design thermostat was.
Larry, is this what you are talking about?
Havn't had enough coffee to be fully awake yet. But it would make sense to me that the small hole with the "metering" "device" would let the system better control the temperature and allow a small amount of coolant flow when the thermostat is closed...

Message: not sure if that little opening means full flow, i know it's supposed to help with getting air bubbles out of the system. i had gotten the same thing at autozone only it was a 180 thermo. the truck ran great with it, lot of power it seemed but it really hit the gas mileage hard cause of like larry said about it running too cool. i've since replaced it with the stant 195 and have regained my gas mileage but lost a little performance that i can feel. would have kept the 180 in but i live in pennsylvania and it does get cold here and don't want to run into problems after the summer when it starts getting cold again.
