Subject: Oil disappearing IP: Logged
Message: I had to take a trip to West Virginia last week, and when I stopped at the first toll booth, I got just a whiff of burning oil. When I finally arrived at my destination, I stopped to fill up. Cleaned the windshield, etc., and then checked the oil, finding it half a quart low. I didn't think much about it, since it had been several weeks since the last oil change. I topped it off and went on about my business.
However, when I headed home, I again got a whiff of burning oil at the toll booths, and when I checked the oil upon arriving home, it was once again a half quart low - and again, I could smell burning oil.
I've been home all week this week, and driving the truck every day. On these around town trips, I don't smell the burning oil.
I don't have any spots on the driveway, and around the valve covers seems clean, so it doesn't appear to be leaking it. There's no smoke, so I don't think it's burning it. Tailpipe is black, but it's always been that way.
What could this be?
02' SLT, 3.9, 66K miles, Fastman, 1.7s, Amsoil, K&N, 3923's, Superchips running 89 octane @ performance setting.

Message: have you crawled under the truck and taken a peek? check the rear main seal or the oil pressure sending unit.

Message: I'm not an expert on this problem with Dakotas, but mine is starting to burn oil since my engine is getting old and the rings are probably wearing out. I can smell it every once in a while, and it burns about 1/2 quart every month or so. Not really sure what I can do to stop it, but my engine is aging rapidly anyways.

Message: No, I haven't crawled under it and it'll probably be a couple days before I can - it's raining cats and dogs right now. I'd think, though, if it was a rear seal or sending unit, that I'd be seeing some spots on my driveway and I don't.
Pete's suggestion about the plenum gasket is a kinda scary thought - that could be it (wonder if my extended warranty will cover THAT?). I'll let you guys know what I find after the rains let up.

Message: hope your extended warranty is better than mine! it's a limited drivetrain extended warranty. all it covers is internally lubricated parts in the engine and drivetrain. tried to get them for lower ball joints and they wouldn't touch it. also inquired about left front hub bearing, they wouldn't touch that either! i'll never buy another extended again!

Message: PCV posible
remove the pcv keep in hose remove vent from other
side run motor
hold your fingers over holes in valve covers
if it sucks in gasket bad if it blows out its ok
A leaky valve cover dripping onto exhaust you
will smell oil burning but have no drips
check be sure there tight
If they are bad get the org gaskets from chrysler
the after market rubber gaskets are junk
If it were burning out exhaust pipe it would be
hard to smell going thru the converter I would
say valve cover leak
