Message: What type of spark plugs seem to work the best in the 3.9L? I have used Bosh platinums and found that they turn white in no time at all. From what I know, white means they are getting too hot. The only type that seem to not turn white are the basic copper champion plugs. There must be something better on the market than the copper champions that are rated for "higher temperatures" and wont turn white.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

Message: Hey V Power,
just a question about the FR5, my spark plugs were turning white, which means that the plugs have gotten too hot....wouldnt putting the FR5 in, that is one range cooler, be worse? or am i miss-understanding the concept?

Message: Autolite 3923s give great results. These are one range cooler than stock.
Yes, you are misunderstanding the concept.
If your plugs are white, the a/f ratio is too lean, causing the plug to run hot. The real fix is to richen the mixture, but you can compensate a bit with a "cooler" plug, meaning it retains less heat. It also will reduce "pinging" from the plug being so hot it ignites the fuel early.

Message: P Bain..... One number hotter or colder shouldn't really do much to plug color. Think I would be checking my 02 sensor and/or looking for a vacuum leak, including the plenum gasket.

Message: The ngk o2 is a cubic zirconion construction and
is what was installed at the factory
there are many diff types out there this is the
right one
another thing here is the case design if it does
not look the same as stock question its use most
parts houses sell you a sensor that is universal
they work ok on a stock motor because you are
running so close to the stock computer tables
you can unplug the o2 on a stock motor and it will
run fairly well on the default tables with a moded
motor with increased flow they will run like crap
the case design is used for a reason flow
charecteristics and location that is why if it
does not look the same don't use it
they are also vented out threw where the wires
come out foe expantion and contraction this vent
being the wrong size or in a diff location will
also effet how it works this is where the bosch
was giving the probs the diff case design and vent
size they were restricting themselfs after about
10,000 miles nd leaning out the air/fuel ratio
I found this out after using the bosch and having
so many complaints of poor performance being
doggie but the gas mileage was still good
watcing them with a scanner they looked ok but
still did not run well
I was getting pissed so I taped them at the comp
used an occiliscope and seen the wave pattern
was all wrong
I than stoped using them and went to the NGK's
and the problems that were coming up went away
and the scope wave form was perfict
There are a few other good ones out there
catco cubic zirconian also nordask makes one
both have the same case design as the org's
and run great
Frm chrysler the o2's list for around $100 the
exsact same sensor direct from ngk.com is less
than half that about half if you add the shipping
summitracing.com is also now selling the NGK NTK
o2 sensors after many complaints from the bosch
they were selling they would run fine for about
10,000 miles than many power and performance
complaints coming in
the case design flow charecteristics and venting
size was causing problems but the manufactures
said its not a problem and they should here that
should work ok They Were Wrong
go to ngk.com get a good o2 sensor sensor's and
enjoy the power performance and gas mileage your
truck has to offer
this is the most important sensor you have and
when the air/fuel ratio is right your plugs will
be a light tan color if not you have problems
I stack the pugs up like this
champ
autolite
split fire
NGK V power
E3 I have mixed thoughts
on this one some ran great others did not
still the best and what I have in all my trucks
and also all the customers running super chargers
and nitrious
THE HALO
A guy just put the halo in his 4.7 jeep went from
17mpg to 20mpg mixed city high way driving and a
lot more power
LS Brisk has one hell of a plug here
The coil over and the imports show unbeleavible
mpg hp and torque gains with the halo's
For the guy who just will not pay $9 a plug the
next best thing would be the NGK V Power $2.25
for the real pig headed and elchepo the $.99
walmart champ or autolite will work with the
autolite running just a little better than the
champ
no matter what plug you run it still needs to be
a light tan color
The stock heat range was used for emissions and
99% of the mag motors will run better 1 range
colder
on the obd1 egr the egr must also be working
properly or your cyl temps will be to hot

Message: Sorrie for getting so long winded ther but I see
this so much
So many people coming in saying there trucks have
no power or performance
Taking them to shops and dealers being told there
is nothing wrong its just the way they run BULL
CRAP is what that is
Saying it used to run so well than replacing all
the sensors one at a time trying to restore the
power then to find out they replaced the o2
with a piece of junk only 10 or 15,000 miles ago
never giving it a second thought
Pull the truck in look at the plugs seeing them
whiter than a ghoost everything showing good on
the scanner
Your map, engine temp, IAT these can all be off
or lazy and they will not even be noticeable in
power or perf unless there really bad the o2
controls the air/fuel ratio and must work right
Even with another sensor being off the air/fuel
will still be right if the o2 is ok
If you do have a bad sensor most simptoms will
be like flat spots or certian rpms running bad
not the entire rpm range, o/d and lockup shifts
or throttle response to down shift quility
The mag motor when running properly the farther
you push the thottle the power will increase
weather its at 1/4 1/2 3/4 or full the power
level will increase and in any position if you
advance it 1/4 of its travel fast from any
position the trans should downshift 1 or 2 gears
if it does not but the power increases that I
would suspect map or tps
It just gets me when even the dealers cant figure
this stuff out give the customer a line of bull
charge them $100 and fix nothing
I like to see customers come back with a smile
on there face saying man this thing runs better
than it did when it was new
Its just sad these modern mechs will not take the
time to find and fix a problem that they know is
there and on top of that lying to the customer
saying thats just the way they run
I was at the local dealer 1 day this poor guy
with a doggie truck than saying both my neibers
have dakotas and there trucks run so well the
service maniger telling him they were just lucky
and got better trucks than you did making the guy
pay $169 for nothing.
I gave him my business card and told him to stop
in and I would take a look
Chargerd this guy for plugs but they were never
changed found the coil wire arching to ground on
the valve cover cap and rotor all carbon tracks
I put a set of used wires cap and rotor charged
him $15 for a set of NGK's no labor sent him out
the door said try your truck now he was just so
happy when he came back in 15 min asked me if I
changed the motor LOL
This is just 1 of many stories I could tell you
about the things that go on around this area
with dealers and privite owned shops its very
very sad
Whats even sader is its usualy done to older
people and ladys
Its more like polotics than auto repair LOL
The world is going down hill when people just
do not care about anything but how many dollars
they can get

Anything else is a waste of money in that engine. NGK's,
Autolites, Bosch etc. will all cost you more money, perform the
same as the champions and won't last as long. I have tried
them all. Just my personal experience and opinion.
