Message: hydralic lifters work great new but after that they suck.
I've pull hydro lifters and they were so loaded with crap they didn't move. so they weren't hydralic anymore.
like when you prime the new ones. the old ones are like solid lifters with no adjustment.
and the dodge is a dirty engine which doesn't help.

Message: bob , how many lifters have you changed. what you say sounds good but it's a load of crap. unless you synthetic for the beginning
hydralic lifters by their own 1950's design are a cup catching crap and carbon.

Message: Sounds like your using Valvoline. You should use a good oil like Pennzoil and change it regularly and you wont have the buildup your talking about.I used to manage a vehicle fleet full of (forgive me)Chevies and they had a real bad problem with gunking up on the inside especially bad with valvoline. One particular motor was so bad I had to drive the pushrods out of the heads with a hammer and punch! The only way to clean them out was to tear the motor down and dip it.I had an old dealership mechanic (from1928-on)told me a last resort quick fix that worked for me a couple of times. He told me to mount a good mechanical oil pressure gauge right in front of the driver so that he had to see it.Then he would drain the oil and put on a new filter and fill the block back up with type F automatic trans fluid.Start up the motor and watch the gauge, when the oil pressure suddenly drops turn the engine off immediatly and change the oil and filter again with a good quality digh detergent oil like Pennziol 10W-30 and run it again for a little while and then change the oil one more time and drive on. The theory being that type F trans fluid is basicaly just a 7 weight super high detergent oil(ever notice how transmissions dont gum up?)and while you run the motor with the trans fluid it is just washing all the junk out of the motor and when all of the gunk hits the oil filter it stops up and the pressure drops. The second change cleans up whatever is left in the engine and the third oil change gets you back to where your supposed to be.
I did this a couple of times on different vehicles, one I drove for 2 days before the pressure dropped,I carried oil and filter with me and changed it on the spot.both vehicles lasted a couple more years after that.Note that this was kind of a last resort because I was going to have to pull the motors and replace them anyway. Just remember, high operating temperature+Valvoline=trashpile. Good luck
