Ticking sound was a failed rod bearing. Dealer replaced the crankshaft, all crank & rod bearings, and oil pump. We'll see..............

Message: Hey Gen2, the part # for improved thrust plate is 53021195AA and it is a tensioner for the chain. This part was standard equipment somewhere around the 99 model year and the funny thing is that most dealers keep one on hand.

Message: I have a 92' Dak... and it ticks like a clock... it sounds like all the lifters tapping something but their all hydrolically adjusted, and im using the stock valve covers.... so im wondering if it isnt the fact gen 1 and 2 dakotas dont have a timing tensioner or something worse.

Message: ...For the people with the "clicking" problems,listen up.First, a failing rod bearing would be a very audible KNOCKING.The worn bearing or bearings,have been hammered by infrequent maintenance(dirty oil),relentless driving habits(foot to the boards),or even failing to provide your engine with enough oil to keep them bearings lubed.Time to fork over for a new engine,or a complete rebuild,either way it's big $$$.Timing chain?? Yeah right.The magnum class of engines have a double roller setup that would last longer than you would own the truck, even if you bought it used.If you've had it changed,your mechanic knows nothing or saw you coming.Take a listen to ANY new or used vehicle at an idle and you'll likely hear some valvetrain clatter,some noisier than others.Very slight "ticking" is not a concern,if it's a loud ticking,you have problems.ie...lifter,rocker arms, maybe even lubrication problems.Now i'm going to tell you what your problem is...LOW GRADE FUEL!!! If you run your engine on regular, it doesn't take long for your engine to carbon up and run like crap.The "clicking" you hear at certain rpm levels while you drive is called "SPARK KNOCK" caused by carbon buildup in your combustion chambers.The carbon creates hot spots on your pistons,valves and the entire combustion chamber,that preignites the fuel prematurely before your engine completes the combustion cycle properly.Your owners manual may say you can burn regular grade fuels,but it doesn't take long for your engine to react to this crap.this fuel will ruin O2 sensors,plug up your converters,and bassically reek havoc with your computer. You can buy chamber cleaners that pour into your fuel tank,or spray down your throttle body,but it won't take it all off,especially if you've logged up some miles.The best solution is to take your heads and intake manifold off and start cleaning.Carefully chisel out the carbon from your heads,intake manifold,and the top of your pistons.Don't let any drop into your engine,you'll suck it into your oil system and trash your bearings.Put it back together with fresh gaskets,and start burning mid-grade or premium.If you have no access to the better fuel, then add a fuel conditioner to your tank every couple of fills to keep your engine free of these deposits.Good luck

All Dodge 3.9L magnum engines before 99 have a timing chain problem right from the factory. Dodge didnt think is was cost effective to put in a timing chain tensioner untill 99 and the only reason they did is because their stock chains are crap and stretch causing them to tick. The tricking noise is caused by the chain hitting the inside of the timing chain cover. A new chain and spockets 180.00 bucks tensioner 60.00 new seals and gaskets 40.00 bucks a day in the driveway and you'll be fine

Message: 92 3.9 4wd... had the same problem with the ticking, truck ran like crap. replaced the timing chain didnt know about the tensioner. timing was alot beter and that sound was gone. still got the lifter noise and probally the bearings need replaced (239,000 on it). the timing chain can be done in 5 or 6 hrs. wish i had known about the tensioner add on.. wll put that on when i redo the mtr..
