I found the answer, yes I do need the special cross shaft. So ignore this post.

You cant just bolt a gear set in
Pinion height and backlash must be set right by
someone who is quilified to do it
I am scared to death when you metion grinding
WOOO
ring pinion and instalation kit new carrier and
pinion bearings and a new crush sleave needed
