Subject: Best mods for low end torque gains? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 3.9L 5 speed 4x4. I see a lot of mods that sacrifice low end gains for top end. I never get my truck much above 2500-3000RPM's so I was wondering what mods would have the best gains from idle to 3000 rpm?
I wouldn't even mind losing some top end to gain more off the line.
I have the 3.55 gears and am looking at 32" tires soon too so a gear change might be in order as well.
Thanks for your help.

Message: 4:10:1 gears, if you have it done probably about 800 bucks. 48mm TB from F&B. if you could find an RV grind cam. they are aimed at making torque down low.

Message: To add to daddio's list, do the crank sensor mod and remove the clutch fan. I just removed the fan and I could not believe the difference. Also install a 180 degree thermostat.

Message: cold air intake
fastman or F&B throttle body
1.7 harland sharp roller rockers
free mods
relocate IAT 6" from throttle body
crank sensor mod
TPS set to .7 .75 volts
gasket match intake
There is also a superchips tunner avalible for
your 2000 3715
MDS 6a box 8207 coil and taylor 8mm or MSD 8.5
plug wires with this the NGK FR5 plug gaped at
.055
once the intake side is done headers, high flow
cat and low restriction exhaust not before or you
will lose low end torque
To start with do the free mods and get a set of
NGK Vpower FR5 gap .040 napa MO26 & 28 cap and
rotor solid brass incerts
Oh ya on your 2000 a set of FMS 21 pound injectors
from Bruce at fiveomotorsports.com they are
matched closer have a 4 hole spray smother idle
better low mid and top end overall smother
running motor and better gas mileage
The better injectors help the computer hold a
more steady air fuel ratio
And a good o2 sensor NGK NTK same as factory uses
buy direct from ngk.com half the price same sensor
this sensor is the most important one and must
work correctly for best performance and gas mileage
A reg stant 195 will run 185 188 in these motors
the org thermostat is a metered flow design and
if you live in an area were it gets cold the
full flow 180's will run under 170 in these motors
and trip a code for running to cold to long
That should get ya going

Message: Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it. I might stay away from the lower temp thermostat if its going to trigger a code in the cold months here in Michigan.
Now I need to get some money so I can start chipping away at these.

Message: i put in the 180 into my truck and i dont trip the code until i am doing 80mpg down the highway when its like below 20 degrees and i didnt let the truck warm up. Yet if i stick around town doing at most 40mpg i never had a problem even when it was below zero.

Message: I am still hesitant about the 180 degree thermostat, I might hold off on that. With cold Michigan winters I am sure it would have a hard time getting up to temp, and if its going to affect gas mileage too then its probably out of my list of mods.
I appreciate all the feedback. Thanks!
Another question, how important is the intake? I currently have the K&N drop in with the stock intake. Is the full CAI going to make that much of a difference? Or is it a matter of complimenting all the other mods to all work together for the greatest gains?
