Subject: RE: Why does it stall on a cold start? IP: Logged
Message: Lol yes I cure mine the same way, keep on the gas and drive a little bit til it stays running.
I have no idea why they would say a leak in the exhaust manifold would cause it to not run like that. The other mechanics I have asked suggested various things such as a new cap and rotor, but that didn't work either. I have a fairly new battery also but it still does it. There is corrosion built up on my positive terminal so i dunno.

Message: Could it be that the dealer was wrong? Maybe you do have a leak, but this is not what causes your stalling problem? Because I'm reading on the internet info about exhaust leaks and can't find anything that relates it to stalling.
Did the problem get any worse over the years?

Message: When refering to exhaust leaks this could cause stalling and rough idle as the hole in the exhaust would let in fresh air. The O2 sensor(s) would read that there is un unused air and dump in more fuel to burn this air. And then once too much fuel it leans it out thats why some guys get a spike in Rpms at idle. Usually if u have a hole bad enough to cause this when driving and coasting u will hear aloud pop every 10 or so. Depends at what Rpm your coasting at. Its air slipping back into the exhaust and exploiding due to the fact of hot exhaust gases and fuel still in the exhaust. But from what u guys are saying it cant really be that due to the fact that when u start your truck cold its in open loop. So it doesnt draw any information from the sensors untill warm when it goes to closed loop

Message: Also i would be looking at sensors and seeing if they are preforming correctly. If the problem gets really bad just reset the computer but this is only temp. as the computer will learn and gain info on how to run the engine from those sensors. so if its a bad sensor it will do it again in time

Message: Its stayed about the same since I've had the truck, though I do notice it more when its somewhat wet, like all the melting snow here in NY. Its going to the shop Tuesday and I am going to have them check out the air temp sensor. Also my check engine light is on but I don't think it has anything to do with the stalling problem.

Message: Maybe, just maybe I got it fixed! Yesterday I cleaned the IAC to the best I could, and today I had no problems whatsoever! The weather today and yesterday is the same: chilly and raining. But I'll need to wait at least a week to be more sure. I also changed the air filter before that, but it didn't do anything.
Jeremy, did you try cleaning the IAC? Maybe that's all it is..
Also, what is the normal rpm level at idle on a cold engine? Because mine is only about 200 rpm more than on warm. It seems a bit low to me.

Message: I have not checked the IAC but will do that in the next couple days. Working 7 days a week leaves little time for much else. As for my RPMs on a cold start, its not much higher than when warm also though I'm not sure of the exact number.

Message: Well, it's been a week and I didn't have a single problem since then. IAC is all it was!
