Message: Just got a '92, v6, auto, 2wd, 96k
Needs some attension in the following areas.. need your thoughts:
- Needs Transmition OD electronics fixed - Advice, how hard is this? Parts, how much?
- Needs - suspention work. Steering drifts a little.. what should I do first?
- What are the first up-grades I shouls consider. This will be a street truck, not off road.

Message: On the trans first remove and clean the
plug drivers side by shift levers a bad
connection will cause problems
On the 92 center wire with key on should
have batt voltage there
next check sols just use a digital voltmeter
get 2 stick pins from your wife mom giilfriend
or someone
key off plug on trans to check sols
Around $100 $150 the sols come as a set if
you need them
this is the easiest way trying to reach the
prongs in the plug receptical on the trans
is almost imposible
center wire to front wire O/D sol
center to rear wire lockup sol
200 ohms 180 to 220 normal
after you do this just take a little silicon
on your finger and rub it over where the pin
was stuck in this will seal the wire back up
If good its internal dirty or stuck valve
try 1 bottle of lube guard red this will help
sticky valves
A fluid and filter change is a good idea but
only use good fluid no dextron or supertech
from walmart
Amsoil
Redline
ATF+3 or +4
The 2 wheel has a rack and pinion steering take
it to a shop and have the tie rod ends checked
ball joints and get a front end alignment
do it right do mess around
Free mods
relocate the IAT 6" from throttle body in
bottom of air cleaner drill 1/2 hole and
screw in it does not need to be grounded
if you need to legthen wires solder them
it does not matter which wire goes where
this will give you more timming and fuel
Crank sensor slot 3/8" move down towards oil
filter, this will give you 3 to 4 degrees
advance timing
throttle position sensor set at .7 .75 volts
center wire and ground this will give you
better throttle response
Remove flap from in front of air pickup
tube this will give you more air
Cheap bolt ons
NAPA MO 26 & 28 cap and rotor solid brass
incerts and 8mm taylor or 8.5 MSD wires
NGK V power plugs on the obd1 .035 gap
this will get more volts to the plugs always
a better thing
A K&N Drop in air filter or cold air setup
A regular stant 195 thermostat will run 185
188 in these motors be sure you also get a
new gasket if you change this runnin cooler
gives the motor more timing and fuel more power
and less prone to get piston ping
Expensive boltins
bigger throttle body
V8 swap good
fastman 46mm better
48 F&B Best
1.7 harland sharp roller rockers
fiveomotorsports.com
Bosch FMS 19 pound injectors
The 92 there is a V6 performance computer
avalible depending on mods done
10 to 15 hp upto 18 if the intake is port
matched runners shortened and head port clean
not ported just a good cleanup
After the intake side is done
headers
highflow cat
low restriction cat back
MSD 6a Box 8207 coil
In this order it does no good to improve the
exhaust before doing the intake side actually
it will lose low end torque
Be sure your o2 sensor is good its most important
On the sensor and NGK plugs
ngk.com will have the good factory NTK sensor
for $44 plugs are like $2.25
try 1 colder FR5 plug most trucks react very
well to 1 range colder plug
That is enough to get you started just do
as many others a little at a time as you
can afford them once everything is done it
all comes togather and compliments each other
and you will have 1 great running little truck
1 thing you should definetly think about with
96,000 miles is replacing the timing chain
and use the chain tensioner, new chain sprokets
and tensioner
