Subject: 3.9 Suggested Mods? IP: Logged
Message: Okay i have the 3.9 on my 2001 dakota sport and have a cold air intake, jet chip stage one, throttle body spacer. What should i do next for performance? Im leaning towards exhaust, or injectors, about the same price... Ive heard of someone putting an r/t throttle body on a 3.9 for power.. does this work or was he jsut b/s'n me?? Thanks

Message: You have the cold air now
A v8 throttle body 96 to 03 non egr type will
bolt right on, mid and top gains 15 to 18hp
20 25 torque at the wheels around $100 you
may also have to swap the cable if linkage is diff
Or
fastman 46mm $250
f&b 48mm $380
These offer off idle to redline gains the same
peak gains but better off idle low end response
over the V8 swap
V8 good any 318 360 96 and up your V6
sensors and cable braket will all bolt on
a new V8 body from chrysler is around $190
all your V6 sensors and cable bracket will
bolt right on
now do the 1.7 roller rockers harland sharp
aroud $300
these 2 mods is a good place to start and will
net 30 plus hp at the wheels and better gas
mileage
relocate the IAT 6" from throttle body this
will drop the reading from 180 200 degrees to
around 90 to 120 will give you more timing
and fuel
crank sensor mod another 3 to 4 degrees advance
good plugs 1 range colder
NGK FR5 gap .040 on your obd2
next superchips 3715 tunner
after the intake side is improved think headers
and a cat back system
dump the stage 1 jet with the tunner
now improve the ignition
MSD 6a box
MSD 8207 coil
MSD 8.5 wires same year 5.2 perfict fit
once the ign is on open the FR5's to .055 gap
Also on your obd2 you will need the tach adapter
or it will throw coil circuit codes
Now your cooking just be sure your o2's are
working good or none of these mods will show
any gains
ngk.com for the o2's if in doubt replace them
they are the most important sensors
Oh almost forgot throttle position sensor
center wire and ground set at .7 .75 volts
this will help throttle response and trans
reaction
start doing these mods when they are all done
they compliment each other and run very well
don't do the exhaust first you will lose low
end torque
have fun
fastman better
f&b best

Message: most truck average 120 140 at the wheels
doing all the mods making sure all sensors are up
to snuff you can get the V6 upto 175hp and about
280 torque
most when done right
hp gain 50 to 60
torque 60 to 80 foot pounds at the wheels
now if you gasket match the intake remove the devider and shorten the runners to 14" another
15hp gain
180 190 rear wheel
that is a very respectable gain and very
noticeable and the gas mileage will go up also
the comp upgrades like the superchips will add
more torque and hp in the low and mid range
2500 to 4000 peak hp around 5 to 10 but the
low and mid gains are nice
On the obd1 the V6 performance comp besides the
low end and mid gains will peak around 10 to 12
hp on a moded motor with a head port clean added
15 to 18 peak around 4200 to 4600rpm
I just poped a little over 200 rear wheel all the
mods and boltons stock cam with 1.7's and the
head port clean and polish
almost forgot you will need a good set of injectors and a min fuel presure of 45psi I am
running 50psi
The FMS injectors are matched closer and will flow
more in the mid and top end better atomization
overall smother running motor and better gas
milege over the factory 1 hole wonders poorly
matched makes it hard for the comp to tune in
and hold a decient air/fuel ratio this is where
most lose gas mileage and peak performance
when and if you do the head port clean up you can
also get them milled .020 up the comp to almost
9.5 over the stock 9.2
doing all this to the V6 will make anyone smile
when they get on it or getting 20mpg plus while
crusing
Its there just needs to be setup and tuned right

Message: This does include having the headers and a good
high flow cat and low restriction exhaust
not the biggest you can find you do need to maintain some back pressure
Now here is the key
doing all this will help but for peak perf you
need to have a good air/fuel ratio and you don't
need anything special to check this
When the plugs are running a nice tan color you
are right on the money no if ands or buts your
there
The dyno numbers I speak of here are O/D off
3rd gear lockup the o/d is a .69 to 1 ratio
3rd is 1 to 1 ratio
Thats the secret here good injectors matched well
holding a good air/fuel ratio and all cyls
running equal
not 1 lean 1 rich a couple just right with the tan
color all must be almost identical in the tan
color on the center insulter of the plug
Than your running efficient and will get peak
power torque and gas mileage and have a lot more
fun driving your truck

If you are gonna supercharge, you can't use the mods that advance your timing - IAT relocted, Crank sensor mod, or the jet chip/or super tuner. Turbo or supercharging require the timing to be retarded.

cold air intake
jba headers (should have did intake side first)
umm, "highflow cat"
flowmaster 40 series deltaflow (sounds great..under 2500 rpm)
cant think of the rest right now

Message: If you super charge you want all the flow you
can get for max gain
1.7's
portmatch
head clean
devider and shortend runners
headers high flow & cat back system
the more flow you have the more gain you get with
a forced air induction
We are running the s/c's with the crank sensor
mod but here all motors react a little diff some
will run with the boost retard at 0 no retard
some need 1 or 2 degrees or they ping also the
IAT relocat is done on all the s/c setups it
not only adds timing but more fuel as well we have
them running with jet chips and superchips tunners
if you get ping you need a boost retard control
so it backs off timing when it comes under boost
throttle bodies
V8 good mid and top end gains off idle low end
will remain the same some will even show a loss
do not mod in any way bolt on as is flows 635cfm
46mm fastman and 48mm F&B these bodies offer
off idle low end gains along with the mid and
top end gains
The fastman and F&B are very close in performance
with the F&B having just a little better response
crisper
All 3 have the same peak gain mid and top 15 to
18hp at the wheels but would you not also want
the off idle low end gains
MSD wires same year 5.2 you will have 2 wires
left over but a perfict fit
92 to 03 multiport injection the mods will work
on all same on the V8's
The MSD systems are very easy to install all you
do is power ground and use the 2 exsisting coil
wires to hook them up obd2 96 and up you will
also need the tach adapter or it will trow coil
circuit codes
the hardest part is figuring out where to mount
the box
With the MSD system coil box and wires yes you
need good wires it will fry the stock wires
right near the ends
very important plug gap
champ autolite .060
NGK Vpower .055
I would go right ot the ngk 1 colder FR5 for best
resaults with the MSD system don't mess around
