Subject: Yellow Fluid leaking IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone,
I am pretty new to cars and trucks so bear with me please. We had gotten about 15 inches of snow a couple days ago, and yesterday i decided to take out my 99 4x4 5sp to see how well the 4x4 worked. It went great except for 2 spots that I got stuck in, I eventually got out but i accidentally burned the clutch pretty good on one of them. One time, when switching back to 4hi from 4lo i heard sort of a clank(its a manual transfer case) THen this morning i looked underneath and saw a little yellow fluid underneath the front transfer case. Is that really bad? What should i do to make sure my truck is ok?

what's a front transfer case? Do you mean the front of the transfer case?
I'd start checking your fluids and see if there are any that are yellow...I've never heard of a yellow fluid that would go in these trucks.
Narrow it down as to where it's coming from, trace it up from where it is dripping. If you cant tell because it's allover the place, clean it all off then check it in a little while.

Message: I bet it's antifreeze running down onto his trany/transfer case. I've never seen yellow oil of any kind no mater what was mixed with it.

Message: Front transer case = transfer case (as compared to the rear differential which I think he may have been mistakenly thinking was called the rear transfer case).
Yellow fluids I can think of when they hit snow...
Brake fluid (I think it's yellow when it hits snow, but not positive on that one). Gasoline - one of our work trucks had a leaky gas tank and it looks just like someone was pissing in the snow. I don't own a 4x4 and my rear diff. has never had a leak, but I'm guessing that gear oil would be yellow in the snow, assuming it's clean. Like trevor said, get underneath there and see if you can trace it back to its source.

get on your back and look for the leak or take it to the shop,
buy a chilton book so you know what you are saying

Message: I thought the front one was a transfer case and the rear was a differential? Are they both differentials? Either way, I cant really get underneath and look...only parking in the street up here and its a mess. It took them 4 days to plow our street so regular cars could go through. I am looking for a ballpark price to get a seal fixed on my transfer case "front differential."

Message: No, you had it right the first time...front = transfer case, rear = differential.
I wouldn't be pricing nothing yet til you can find out what exactly is wrong...otherwise those prices are meaningless.

Message: the front and rear axles have the differentials. the part in the middle, bolted to the transmission is the transfer case.

can you taste this fluid?...just get a little bit on your finger and taste it. Let us know what it tastes like.
Yes fuel makes snow yellow, but i'd imagine that your truck would smell like gas if it was leaking anywhere.

Message: Ok im not the Trevor from the earlier thread, but. the front differential has a yellowish thick stinking gear oil in it(when its new) and will look like piss in the snow. the clanking could have been a universal joint going out, or if you were still moving getting engaged too hard.... does the 4wd work?? is the 4wd (front) howling when in gear???? if you did blow the front differential seal the you need to get wet and cold and check this out. It can get extremely expensive to replace the front differential, seals and other associated parts. I would'nt want to pay it out. get a piece of cardboard or plstic and go sledding under it. Better safe than sorry. Find the leak.. grab ahold of the front driveshaft shake up and down. Does the u joint move if it does get it replaced. You dont want the front driveshaft to come off, you'll tear the hell out of a bunch of stuff..GOOD LUCK....

Message: Just wanted to update everyone just in case they were wondering...
Found a broken pinion which was causing it to leak a little. Nothing too serious, just gonna have the shop do it for about 125 out the door since I have no way of doing it myself. Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate it
