yes it is..... common problem is under the hood the main vacuum line that goes inside the firewall cracks and breaks under the hood causing the heat and a/c system to go to a default and only blow out the defrost vent.... second common problem is a bad selector switch but wouldnt put money on it and 3rd would be broken vacuum line in the dash going to the selector switch and 4th possible would be a disconnected vacuum cluster plug at the back of the control head there in the dash....

thanks guys, I really appreciate all the help, I bought one of those chilton car manuals for my dakota, but it does not list anything in there about the vacuum lines. I guess ill just have to start taking stuff apart and checking it out.

Check the lines under the hood. It's not uncommon for the harder plastic tubing to break during routine maintenance from just banging up against it.

you can also check the actuators inside the cab, make sure they are connected. One drivers side and one passengers side. Little roundish metal things with differnet colored hoses.

They all grooom in behind the HVAC controls. You have to take the dash off, remove the HVAC unit to see it.

My money is on the vaccuum lines under the hood.
