Subject: Whats wrong with my engine IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1994 dodge dakota 2x4 3.9L V6 5 speed that i just cant figure out what is wrong with it. I've took it to a macanic they couldn't find anything but its smoking, pumping oil into the exshost, it's missing and its really low on power. If anyone has information that they can help me out it would be most greatful.

Message: Check the intake plenum gasket - with the engine OFF, open the throttle body bores and look down them into the manifold. If you see anything more than a very light film of oil...it's blown and needs to be replaced. It's a common issue on the Magnum engines (3.9/5.2/5.9L) and will cause excessive oil usage, poor performance, misfires, detonation, and eventually oil in the exhaust.

Message: Check the plugs !
If all look the same , then as above.
However if one , or more are "carboned" up
you may need to look more closely at the particular cylinders involved.

Message: both great suggestions. it could be either the plenum gskt or oil control rings. if it is the oil control rings there is something you can try. it has worked for me with an oil consumption problem on my son's saturn.
pull all spark plugs and pour 2-4 ounces of either GM Top engine cleaner or Marvel mystery oil into each cylinder and let it soak in the cylinders overnight. the next morning turn the engine over to push all of that fluid out. re-install spark plugs and start the engine. it will smoke quite a bit at first but it will clear up after a while. sometimes it is necessary to do this soaking overnight twice.
my son's saturn went from using a qt of oil every 1000 miles to using less than a qt in 3000 miles. might not work for everyone but it worked for me.
