Subject: Rear brake noise IP: Logged
Message: Hello all,
I hope someone here can help. I have a 2001 CC, V6, 5-speed Dakota. It has 64,000 miles on it. It's been a great truck but there is a strange squeal, screech type noise when I come to a stop and take my foot off the brake pedal. The noise is definitely coming from the rear (drum) brakes. This only happens when I have come to a complete stop and let up on the pedal, and the noise only lasts less than half a second, like a "chirp". I had new rotors & pads done on the front, cleaned & adjusted the rears and a brake fluid flush done last week, noise seems worse now.
Anybody else ever have this? Any ideas/suggestions would be most appreciated..
Thanks,
Jimmy

Message: I have the same problem, only mine sounds more like a dinosaur that just laid an egg - SCRUNNNK!! Only happens just as I hit a dead stop. Like you, mine wasn't stopping all that great, and I had the fronts done and the rears adjusted up.

Message: Thanks Trucker,
My brakes work fine now, no problems with stopping, and no pulsation or vibration in the pedal or steering wheel. The only thing wrong is that noise that drives me nuts. Somebody at a tire store said it was caused by brake dust accumulating in the drums, but how can that be when the rears were done just a few days ago? Whatever it is, it can't be normal.
Any help you guys have is appreciated. I am all ears...

Message: Update on the rear brake squeal. The Dodge dealer today told me the noise is from rust forming inside the brake drums. They said they see it sometimes, maybe it has something to do with the fact I live in Florida where even in winter it can get humid outside. Their fix for it is to clean the rust off with "special brake cleaner" and lube the backing plate where the shoes contact the plate.
The tire place that did the brake work last week readjusted the rears tonight for no charge, which did eliminate the noise for now, but I'm sure it will be back in time. But they adjusted one wheel too tight and when I got home the rim was almost too hot to touch and I could smell the hot brake shoes. I called the tire place and they offered to readjust it again tomorrow, but I adjusted the brakes on that wheel myself. When I jacked it up I could barely turn the wheel by hand. The brakes were sure enough adjusted too tight. The other side was fine, so I adjusted it to match, drove forward, stopped and backed up about 10 times to set the self adjusters. So far there's still no squeal, but it will probably come back sooner or later. So then I'll pull the drum and clean any rust and grease it.
Hope this helps anybody here who sees this problem.
Thanks,
Jimmy
