Subject: can a 3.9 take some NOS? IP: Logged
Message: hey guys.
i have a slightly modded 95,3.9,auto, 4x2 dakota(of course, what else would i drive! i was wondering if anyone had any tips for spraying this truck? i want like a 50 or 75 wet shot. do you guys think it'll take it? the trans? i just want it 2-3 nights a year for when i want to go fast, right now, it'll do 108 and hold it on any ground, but takes awhile to get from 90+. also, if i tap the fuel off the rail, will the pump and regulator feed bolth? and the only way i see to induce it is with a fog nozzle in the air cleaner. any opinions or good ways to do this would be greatly appreciated. by the way, engine is very healthy, only 76k, and i put a performance roller chain kit in it. has hot exhaust, jet stage 1 module, good ignition, ngk fr4's(sweeeeeeeeeeet)! and some other little stuff.
thanks guys

Message: First off, yes...they will handle nitrous up to 100HP with no problems. I wouldn't run the Jet chip though - they advance the timing too much for safe nitrous useage. Use one heat range cooler on the plugs as well and gap them .005" smaller than factory.
NX makes an excellent starter kit (EFI kit) that comes with 50, 75, and 100HP pills. I would recommend that you get the bottle warmer as well - you need to keep the pressure at about 1000-1100psi in the bottle to have a proper nitrous/fuel mixture.
Don't worry about the fuel rail tap - the pump will keep up.
Start out with the 50 and then move yourself up gradually to learn the new found power. Starting out with a 100HP shot can get rather interesting (or fun) when the back-end comes up to kiss the headlamps. ;)
I've run Nitrous, Boost, Nitrous + Boost, and now just a 75HP shot...done it for many years on my built up 3.9L (now a 4.0L).

Message: tom
just curious why you picked the wet system?
from what i've read the dry systems seem to be a safer choice

Message: Dry systems are definitely not the safer route. You need a fuel enrichment system to prevent detonation and that comes with the wet system. If it's a race engine that's built for nitrous use (as in up-jetted carb or stand aolne fuel system) then yes...dry is a better route...but not for the daily street vehicle.

Message: i use a dry 150 shot......when you hook it up..make sure you turn on the key...open the throttlebody to wideopen then measure the tps voltage, if its 9 volts set the dry nos control.....it will know when its at wide open,,,and will only let the nos come on at wideopen,,,,,smokem up gave me a 1 and 1/2

Message: A couple things wrong with that:
(1) TPS doesn't operate up to 9v (0-5v scale)
(2) 150HP Dry Shot will damage the 3.9L without any fuel enrichment - I know this for a fact...A/F is raised to a dangerous level
(3) Even if it actually works: There is detonation that you can't hear
Be safe - run a wet shot that is properly tuned (fuel enrichment wise).

Message: hi fassdak, thanks for the cool response. i don't know who told that guy dry is better? not good. i've never messed with NOS, but i,ve been a mechanic for five years, and the theroy of how nos works, i don't know why anybody would even make or install a dry system. i'm just want it for occasional use, just 50 hp. i hate to knock down the plugs and chip, they helped so much. do you think if i stay with the 50 horse and the chip it will not hurt it? it's only a stage one, and i didn;t do the crank sensor mod to keep the timing back a little, what do you think? and what should i use to get it in the motor? tapping intake doesn't look like like a good idea, and the air cleaner thing? that seems kinda hack, butll work. what did you use????
thanks again

Message: I actually tested the 50, 75, 100, and 150 shot on my built V6 - 50-75 is fine as a dry shot but either larger injectors and fuel controller for the 100+ or stick with the wet...I stuck with the 100HP wet shot.
Since you only have the Stage-I (not II), you 'should' be fine up to 75HP. You can try the 100 shot but run Super Unleaded and look at your plugs after a few runs with the 100HP shot.
The intake tube tap works just fine. Make sure you're about 6" from the airhat opening and make darn sure you aim the nozzle the right way (oops...yes, I've done that on accident). ;)
I used the NX EFI Kit with bottle warmer and the Shark nozzle tapped into the intake inlet tube. I still have it and still use it occasionally. The nozzle has been in the tube since 2003.

Message: i used up to a 75 shot from a NX EFI kit while having a Jet Stage II plugged in with no i'll effects.. but keep in mind, no motor is the same. I removed the stage II when i switched to the 100 shot jets.
i always ran premium in my truck.. nitrous or not.

Message: I remember using my Jet Stage-II before reprogramming the PCM and it was "ok" with the 50HP shot, but the 75+ shots were ping city. As mentioned...every motor is different (and software revisions in the PCM as well).
