i'd wonder if the V6 tranny would hold up and

Im not worried about the tranny holding up, gonna rebuild it tight, not gonna beat it, just want the 318 so i can put headers and a 3 inch exhaust LOUD AND TALL!!! small lift and 33,s. Being a short bed it'll look tough. Does anyone know a good place for headers for this or does anyone have them???

Theres a couple of things to think about before you dive in.The trans will work fine because its the same trans that Chrysler has used behind the 318 and 360's for the last 30 years. The first problem you will encounter is that the earlier(91 and down v-8's) dont have the motor mount boss that it takes to bolt a v-8 into your truck. Most of the magnum motors have the mounting bosses that you need. The only way around this problem is to use the Schumacher swap kit to mount the early block(very expensive)
The next problem is that the early pre 91 Dakota with the flat front lacked the radiator clearance to install a v-8,thats why they rounded the front on the 1991 and up trucks. You can overcome this problem by upgrading to the 1991 and later core support and bumper and headlights, hood and grill or you will have to run an electric fan in front of your radiator(you might want to check this clearance also) any of the later headers for the Dakota up to 1996 should work as long as they are made for a 4 by 4.The later magnum stock manifolds will work too.You might have a small frame interferance problem on the passenger side, requires a little cutting and welding. There are a few other minor problems you will encounter. If you need to kmow anything about this swap you can e-mail me at chuckied@labsco.com Good luck, hemichuck

wow, that actually dont sound extremly bad, it needs a front clip(sort of) due to the guy i got it from use a fire hydrant to stop it when the breaks went out. Or he was drunk off his gorde...
Now i know what to look for, if I get a magnum motor will I be able to run it without all the computer crapp most of those years have came with, I wanted an older motor so I could run a basic 4 barrel and GM hei. I put a gm hei on my last 318 and WOW what a huge difference in everything. Thanx for the info, Got your email address and im sure will have more guestions as I dig in... mikeysmonte@yahoo.com

You can run a magnum engine without all of the fuel injection by changing the intake manifold to a 4 barrel style available from Mopar performance or edelbrock or my personal favorite is the crosswind manifolds that are identical to the edelbrock part for $100 less.they usually bring around $150-$160 on e-bay.You can use the factory chrysler electronic ignition that was used in just about everything from 1973 up.I have a wiring diagram that shows how to hook it up.The front cover and all of the accesories off of the V6 should bolt up to the V8. Magnum motors are starting to get cheap in the junkyards.Around Louisville you could pick one up at pull-a-part for $150.Good luck, hemichuck

I was told to ask by a very reliable mechanic friend of mine to ask a question about the tranny, he says its very possible the v6 tranny has less clutches than the v8 tranny, if so he suggests i get a tranny from a v8 with the 318 to rebuild also,,, I have rebuilt a few turbo 350's but never a 904, is this a possibility?? or will the one in the truck do just fine with a new rebuild kit and shift kit??? and what gears typically came with this truck?

The V6 trans might have a different clutch pack but I wouldnt bet on it.It would probably be simpler if you plan on building the trans anyway to just have your trans guy swap the clutch drum out of a heavier application. Most of the time its the same drum with different clutches and steels so the cost would be minimal. The rebuild kits usually have the clutches and steels to handle just about any application that the particular trans was used in which means everything from a V6 to a 360 V8.This trans design came into play back around 1962 and was used in darn near everything Chrysler built. To be honest I wouldnt even worry about it.

go 92 or 93
had a different cam and bigger exhaust

the 91 was a pre-mag
which can also be built to be powerful, but the mags will come with more power right out of the truck
