Subject: Steering/clunking Problem IP: Logged
Message: Each moring as I drive out of my garage my 2004 quad cab makes a clunking sound from the left front of the vehicle. The sound is made periodically when I drive, when I turn right.
Also, when driving on un-even/bumpy pavement the steering wheel is pulled right or left depending on the pavement. The wheel is pulled harder when I'm braking at a stop light.
The truck has 26K miles and 2 different dealers say nothing is wrong with suspension. Front end alignment was checked by an alignment shop, all ok.
Could I have shock absorber problems or rack and pinion issues? Please help as I would rather sell the truck than have these problems.

Message: How close are you to running out of warranty? Get it in writing. Dealers like to run you out of warranty. By doing so they make more money charging you instead of factory. Sounds like it might be a ball joint.

Message: Many Dodge trucks of this vintage had a ball joint recall. Check your VIN here if you don't trust the dealer:
http://www.chrysler.com/owners/index.html and enter your VIN under Recalls at the lower left.

Message: Might be your intermediate steering shaft...Dodge puts a puny little u-joint in there that fails.
I've replaced mine twice but my truck has 267,000 miles too.

Message: Has anyone checked the front wheel hubs? They can easily cause this problem. Ball joints are definitely a possibility as well.
Dealers don't run people off until they're out of warranty - I know this for a fact. If they have done this to you, you can contact their district rep and file a complaint with DC.

Message: Thanks everyone for the replies.
I have a new problem, my steering column is making a creaking sound after I've driven 20-30 minutes. The sound appears when I brake hard, turn left or right.
The dealer replaced the intermediate shaft with no effect on the creaking sound. The steering has improved but is not like it was when the truck was new.
Any suggestions?
Thanks all!
