Subject: computer reset on 2003 dakota IP: Logged
Message: I changed the o2 sensor on the exhaust crossover pipe and the check engine light stayed on. had autozone recheck it and they said the sensor was working now but the wiring to it was bad. checked all connections and was fine. had them reset the light and it came back on within minutes. since then I have been told that the computer needs reset. Is this a dealer or shop only function or can I do it myself?
Thanks

Message: V6 3.8 magnum I was told that anytime you replace a sensor the computer has to be reset as it thinks that the old sensor is still in place. a reset at a local shop costs $100 just to hook to the analyzing machine for the reset. seems a little much to me

Message: I believe you can reset it by disconnecting a battery cable and turning ignition to start to drain any stored charge - but if the light was off and then came back on again there is likely a problem that still needs to be adressed.

Message: as kowalski said if the code came back you still have a problem somewhere.
dam, 100 bucks to plug it up and reset it. you can buy an OBDII scanner @ Autozone for $120 bucks and read and reset codes all day long on any OBDII vehicle.
