Subject: Whining in 4 wheel drive.. IP: Logged
Message: 99 4x4 V6.
Had the whole front end worked on this summer. Noticed every once in a while, I had oil leaking by my front passenger tire. Not coming from engine. My brother said something about it coming from differental? Now, for the first time tonight since last winter.. i put my truck in 4 wheel drive. I noticed a winding/whining sound coming from it. And i could have sworn on one turn (turning right) i heard this weird clicking noise? Once i took it out of 4 wheel drive it seemed to be fine. So i take it, its not my transmission or could it be? Or was my brother right! Please help!! Thanks soo much!!

Message: sound like because of the oil leak that you may not have any oil left in the diff itself, if it is grinding like that only in 4x4 then that is prolly your problem but if it makes noise just turning corners in 4x2 mode then you prolly have a cv joint problem. never know till you pull things apart.

Message: With all due respect, CV JOINTS don't whine. They do click in turns if bad. As a rule they don't go out unless the boot is torn and the grease gone running them dry with water and dirt getting in to help distroy them. When you was told it was leaking did you bother to check the differential or have it checked. You never said so I'm guessing your still running it dry. Now the bad news is when your driving without your truck in 4 wheel drive, there is no stress on those gears BUT they still turn all the time. With it in 4 wheel drive the gears bind together and having run them who knows how long low or out of fluid those gears are now SCARED. This is what makes them whine. Putting fluid in will lessen the whine but once scared they will always whine plus over time get worse. The fact that this problem is in the front end, you most likely can drive it with the whine for a long long time depending on how much you use the 4 wheel drive and IF you keep it full of fluid. Either fix the leak or check it all the time to discover how fast it leaks down. Putting your finger in the fill hole, you need to be able to bury it in fluid. Once you can just barely touch it, then it's low and needs fluid.

Message: also, i hope you kept the paperwork & receipts from the front end work you had done during the summer. they may have done or not done something for this to happen.

Message: Thank you. Yes I do have the receipt. We tried to look but couldnt find where the leak was coming from. Thanks..
And the clicking noise only made that sound once last night, and it was in 4 wheel drive when it did. I know whos fault this is, and I dont think they will fix it.

Message: I think what has happened is the outside CV joint is bad that would be where the oil came from and a CV can whine if it is going bad, I have seen this myself. As for the diff being low on fluid, that is possible, I think however, the real problem is with the CV joint, and that is where I would start along with checking the diff oil. Good luck

Message: With all due respect, I'll go with the CV whine but personally, I've changed a boat load of CV's and never heard one whine. All was clicking in turns and the really bad ones could/would click in the streight aways

Message: A hard boot will also cause a clicking sound
not nessasarily the joint itself
the rear has 2 seals 1 on each axle
1 seal on the pinion
or the cover can leak
check the vent tube if pluged this can cause a
pressure build up and cause the seals to drip
a wheel bearing could whine
check the fluid in the transfer case as well
use some good amsoil synthetic trans fluid in
the case
the cases will whine a little when in 4 low
that is normal just being able to hear it but
not real noisy
if you see grease or oil right on the wheel I
would suspect a bad wheel bearing
Auto Zone timkin a very well known and good
brand around $100 they are seal units the half
shafts are between $150 to $200
the boots are replaceable but you need the right
tool to expand them to put them on most shops do
not have this expander to replace the boots
