Subject: whats the deal with pinging? IP: Logged
Message: i have a 2001 dak with the 3.9 magnum. Ive had pinging and some knocking since day one. My buddy has a 1988 dak with the pre-mag 3.9. his truck does not ping or knock at all. in fact it seems like his motor runs better than mine, and it has like 200k miles on it while mine only has 40k. I have meticulously maintained my truck since it was brand new, so i know it wasnt anything i did. does anyone know if the pinging in these motors started when it was upgraded to magnum specs? i know the magnums have different cylinder heads and MPI compared to my buddy's TBI. It doesnt matter what grade gas i use either, it still pings even on 93 octane.

Message: Hmmm, could be the timing chain which can sound like a ping or knock. If you check the forums, you'll see many posts about the 3.9 L timing chain noise. Apparently, Dodge thought they didn't need a tensioner to keep the chain quiet. Well, now there is a tensioner that cost about $40.00 and will fix this noise. Any Dodge dealer can listen to it and verify what the noise is for you, probably for free.

Message: you may have a leaking plenum gasket. It will cause pinging. Look down the throttle body with the throttle held wide open if you see oil you have a leaking plenum gasket. If not try reading here.

Message: I think only the 97 was the year without the timing chain tensioner, but I could be wrong.

Message: The tensioner started in 1998. Ryan, your truck should already have one and 40K miles is way too early to be hearing a loose chain.
Is the pinging occuring when you are driving uphill or throttling hard? You may have carbon in the cylinder head.
Get your truck up to operating temperature, put it PARK, and slowly pour 1/3 to 1/2 a bottle of Seafoam down your throttle body while you have a friend throttle the engine to 2500 RPMs. It will run like crap while you are doing this but when you're done- no more pinging.
I do this with clean water, but a friend told me that this can create super high pressure and can cause a head gasket to blow. It worked right away for my truck. Using Seafoam may be a safer choice.
If this doesn't work, xmr2 may be right about the plenum gasket. Look down you T.B. first and see if it is oily down there. It should be dry.
