Subject: Clutch fan runs too much IP: Logged
Message: Hey all, I posted this 2 days ago, but it's gone...
I replaced the clutch on my '00 V6 2 weeks ago. The old one was squealing pretty bad when it was cold outside. The new one went on pretty easy, but now it runs almost constantly...instead of engaging/disengaging when it should.
I live in Wisconsin, so it's relatively cold now. Why is my fan engaged almost constantly? My MPG is suffering, and I hate the extra noise. Did I get a bad clutch? It was new, not a refurb.

Message: The fan should turn all the time. How can you tell when it is engaged and when it is not? I know mine is noisy when it is really hot outside and doesn't always disengage when I stop. How do you know the squealing isn't caused by the belt? It would be extremely unusual for it to be fully locked up when it is cold outside. When it is fully locked it is difficult to turn by hand with the engine off.

Message: I can hear it when it is engaged...that's how I know it is engaged.
I know it turns all the time, but it turns at engine RPM when the clutch is engaged...which makes it quite a bit louder than when no engaged. Maybe my hearing is just a lot better than yours?
When the engine is off, I can turn it by hand easily. If I try to spin it, it turns probably less than 1/2 a revolution.
The noise is gone. The noise was caused by the old clutch. The problem is the fan is almost always engaged now with the new clutch.

Message: could be a defective clutch. you could live dangerously as i do and run without the clutch fan and rely on the aux electric factory fan. or buy an aftermarket electric fan and put that clutch fan in file #13.

Message: I'm tempted! I'm sure it'd be fine 8 months out of the year. Plus I never tow with it, and rarely haul anything too heavy.
So, I can just remove it? The pulley won't fly off? :)

Message: the pulley is pressed on to the waterpump. now, i have had mine off for about 18 months and no problems at all. even with an underdrive crank pulley.
but, remember you are taking a chance running without it. for security, you could throw the clutch fan in the bed of the truck just in case.
if the elec. fan or relay bite it for some reason you will be s.o.l. without the clutch fan but that's a chance you take.

Message: I usually have mine off when the temps are consitently below 70 degrees. Never hint of above normal temps.

Message: Well, I finally got it off. Had to make a custom tool to hold the pully while turning the big nut.
No problems yet, but it's 10 degrees outside as well!
Time to look for an electric fan option for the hot months.
