Message: Oh man, I just had my resolve to ONLY deal on the net for parts strengthened once again.
There is one local performance shop for go fast parts, rims etc, but I just despise going in there. I'm not certain if the guy is chauvinistic, or anti-truck biased or just an indiscriminate type of all-purpose åsshole - but against my better judgement I went in there yesterday. He quoted me $169 for the Lakewood Traction bars, the yellow ones that fit our daks.
Suffice to say that he was neither impressed nor courteous when I pointed out that AutoZone and Summit sell them for around $30 US.
This has been far from my first such experience with this particular shop - he has looked over my head when I ask about a part (usually quoting the part number for him before he can look it up) and asked me when "he" can come in and confirm that it is the correct part! This after repeatedly being told that it is my dåmn truck! And - he sold me the wrong header bolts and refused to take them back & return my money!
To heck with supporting local business, when I get my boyds (and my traction bars, I am going to leave the dåmn things bright visible yellow) I'm going to park in front of his shop window. Heh, heh, quite a few dollars that didn't go into his till there. :)

Message: There's a couple of speed shops in my neck of the woods that are real shysters. I remember hearing the owner of one discouraging some kid from ordering parts from Summit, because "They won't accept them back if it doesn't fit".
This from a guy who is infamous for giving you the wrong part, then making you go thru a ration of Sh_t when you try to return it!

Message: Lesley,
Even though I'm not a blond woman, I know what you're talking about because my wife (who is blond as well) goes through it all too often.
I have been there in person many times when she's talking about her vehicle (whether it's parts or something that needs to be done to it) and the person behind the counter "talks" to me or gives the attitude that she doesn't know what she's talking about. It doesn't make any difference that she rattles off part numbers, correct terminology or anything else that you would expect a gearhead to say. It's even happened at local car shows when she was asking questions about Ram trucks in anticipation of buying hers. Some people just can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that a woman can be just as knowledgable as a man (and quite often more so) when it comes to automobiles.
And for the record, my "dumb blonde" of a wife has been "in" the automotive field for many years. Her projects include (but not limited to) a frame-up restoration on a '67 Camaro (she did all the work except build the engine), multiple 1000+ hp pulling trucks with her ex husband and go-carts that would blow the doors off ricers.
She's taught me quite a bit over the years and I always go to her for a valuable second opinion.
Anyways ... screw that guy as he definitely has his head so far up his arse that he's tickling his tonsils, but don't totally blow off local businesses. They might be few and far between, but there are some good guys (and gals) out there.
Stepping off my soapbox :)

Message: I don't think it's because your a woman, Lesley. I go to speed shops in Cali. all the time, and it's usually the same treatment. Was wondering though, why are you putting traction bars on. Don't tell me that V-6 of yours is starting to get out of control. I've found out that 150 lbs. of weight helps. Like a few sand bags or something over the axle. My next endevour is getting the rear end re-geared and having lockers installed. Looks like about a $1100 U.S. endevour. But I want it and it'll go well when I do my body lift. Let me know how the traction bar thing goes. Later, Greg

Intense Chuck - it is great to see you back here on this board. Your wife sounds awesome, I aspire to that kind of automotive knowledge.
I think you guys are right, that kind of guy just stuck his head up his åss, found it warm and comfortable and decided to leave it there.
I'm taking my truck to the "Canadian Dodge Truck Shootout" (organized by folks at dodgetrucks.org) at Cayuga Raceway in June, so that's what I wanted the traction bars for.

Message: Okay, sorry.
With the right rear suspension set-up, and the right kind of traction bars, they will help prevent wheelspin and wheel hop on hard launches. It takes a long time to correctly explain it, but basically they are for drag racing.
