My fiance's dakota has been throwing a code since we got it threee months ago. The code s unknown, no mechanic can/will tell us what is wrong. The truck runs hot, radiator is not leaking, but the overflow tank throws waterout. He has to add water/coolant every day. Now it won't start at all. no lights-no on is at home. There is no leaks any where that we can see. Have been all over and under the truck. If it started running hot before today, he could stop, let it cool down, add water and it was fine. Now it just won't start. The thermostat was replaced and the radiator cap, spark plugs, etc. Can someone please please help?????

Not a good idea to let a check engine light go for so long without finding out what it means. Try turning ignition on off on off on (not to start) to see if you get any codes displayed in the odometer window. Be prepared to write them down; should end with "pdone".

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I had the same problem with a Toyota that I had. No one could tell me what was wrong or why it was over heating. After about a week of this crap, I took the oil cap off and looked at it. It had a white film in the cap. That told me my head gasket had blown. Replaced the gasket and all was fine.

It was really strange. If the engine was cold and I cranked it up, it would overheat. I would let it cool for a little while and then crank it up again. It would run fine the rest of the day. Once the engine cooled off too much I would have to repeat letting it run hot then cool for a while.I guess it was sealing it's self off once it reached a good temp. Hope this gives you a starting point.

It's funny how 3 Dealer's didn't have a clue.
