Message: "but for real i have never seen a clogged cat unless u use additives" I've seen two in normal driving - both between 100K and 130K miles, in a Dakota and in an Acclaim, both well-maintained.

Message: Newer cat's will NOT get 'plugged'..
However , the "active" elements may get
contaminated or covered up with gunk and
thereby lose effectiveness.
They can also become TOTALLY cleaned { burnt }
out so that nothing is left inside...

Message: Well, I haven't cut open a recent catcon, but what happened in both of these cases is that the honeycomb broke loose and balled up, blocking the flow completely - so badly the vehicles would not even start. I'm not sure why a "modern" one could not do the same. What's different?

Message: The catylist coming loose and the cat being plugged are not the same thing. It's even possible to have the catylist break into pieces and clog the muffler or, in the case of a straight thru system, get blown out the tail pipe. It's difficult to tell what people are talking about when they simply say "my cat is plugged."

Message: a big loss of power is what a pluged cat will do
I would first get a new o2 sensor
ngk.com buy direct same as factory around $60 with
shipping
Any cat can fail and plug
up to 95 obd1 there is no down stream post cat
o2 sensor to tell the comp it has faild only
96 and up have this second o2 sensor
the o2 lazy will kill gas mileage and power also
with a pluged cat it will have a quiting effect
less noise coming out the tail pipe
lots of blow back and your oil will turn black
real fast
go from there but start with the o2 sensor

Message: truckperformance.com has the slip fit carsound
high flow cats for around $90
just mesure overall length cut the old one out
leave 3" for the slip 1 1/2 each end and get 2
clamps and your done
As someone once said on this board they need to
be welded in this is a pile of crap they do not
need to be welded in

Message: "i don't know if it is illegal where you live" It's illegal everywhere in the US, as it violates a federal law to tamper with or disable any emissions control.
"I've got a 97 and only have an O2 sensor AFTER the cat." Impossible. There's ALWAYS an upstream one since the beginning of O2 sensor use in the early 1980s.
