ok, another issue. the catalytic converter was trashed in my 'new' 92 3.9. so, i cut it out with a reciprocating saw and planned to throw in a piece of straight pipe. BUT, i realized AFTER i cut it out that the diameter of the pipe at the end of the headers off the engine are not uniformly round. it is about 3 1/4" tall and 2 3/4" wide(it's oval). well, i can't drive with open headers(loud as all get-out!) so i used the old beer can trick with LOTS of aluminum tape and gasket sealant temporarily. still a little leaky, but better. ANYWAY how the heck can i get something more permanent set up???? i don't have any welding equip, but if i can get a hold of somebody that does, how can i put something on that would work? any input or suggestions would be EXTREMELY appreciated!!!

Go to a local muffler shop. perferably someone you know. Have them weld a straight pipe in. Only a few bucks and you in business. My muffler guy cut mine out and did the pipe for $20.00. Well worth it.

no, it sounds really good actually. i was really surprised. i had it rigged temporarily and even w/ it still leaking exhaust it sounded really deep. to be honest, this is a work truck for me for the most part. i'm not into tricking out cars or trucks. i'm a cycle guy. but i won't complain about the improvement in the sound. :-)

i'm not sure what the laws require state-wide in illinois. i know in cook county(greater chicagoland area) they do emissions testing and it is required. i live a couple counties south. more of a farming area, and i don't think anybody really cares. i really don't care if i have to put one back in, and i probably will. it's just that my gas mileage sucked big balls and i was hoping that it was because the cat was nearly plugged up. so i cut it out and i'm needin a fix so i can drive it for a while. then i'll probably get a new one put it when i find a good price. local shops all want well over $200 to put a new one in. i wonder if the cat actually costs that much or if it's just all in the labor. i shall find out! my mileage is sitting at around 11-12. :-( i would guess that a new o2 sensor would help. old one is probably burnt up after the cat was screwed up. i've replaced everything else except o2.

The law requires it but who is gonna know IF you dont have smog tests? In my area (S. FLA) we have no tests. So I am A OK.
I like the sound too! Alot better than stock. Did you feel any power increase? I really did. I would recomend it to anybody who DOESNT get tested. I am gonna remove the guts from mine and weld it back on, just for visual inspections. Mechanic shops and get ya if they wanna be a dick about it. Good Luck

yeah, there was a significant increase in pickup. again, i had it temporarily rigged, and today it burned through my beercan fix. lol. it was nice while it lasted. but i'm gonna get it done for real on sunday i hope. i'm gonna throw a k&n in too just to see what kind of difference i see. i checked out the filter that's in there now and it's got bugs and bees and all kinds of crap in it! so,i'm sure that's not helping anything. got this truck for 2 grand, so doin little stuff like this isn't a big deal. if i could just get better mileage!!!! maybe a little more tuning will help.
