Subject: What sensors are in the 42RE? IP: Logged
Message: Decided to fix my 42RE tranny instead of swapping it out for another one...I'm gonna replace all the sensors, tighten the bands, fix my leak, and see if that cures my issues. If it don't, at the least the leak will be fixed and I'll trade the damn thing in for either a V8 4x4 Dak or Ram.
Of course, before I do that...I need to know what all sensors are in the tranny (2 I believe?). A part number for em would be GREAT. Thanks guys!

Message: With all of the things you plan on doing to resolve your tranny problem, I do not see where you mentioned the valve body. You may find that a rebuild of the valve body resolves your tranny problems. It did mine. Of course you did not state what your tranny problems are.

Message: Sorry, I've stated em before but noone could really pinpoint the issues so I just figured I'd mention replacing the sensors.
My tranny shifts really weird...like if I get on the gas, sometimes it'll go up to about 3 grand, rev up approx. 100-200 rpm's and then shift. Doesn't surge or anything, just a short rev and a smooth shift...too smooth.
Other times if I REALLY jump on the gas, it'll downshift one gear too low, then upshift back to where it was, and finally downshift to the proper gear (aka gear hunting...badly). It surges quite a bit and it's very embarassing when you have a loud exhaust setup like mine because EVERYONE hears it....or it'll gear hunt where it gets up to about 4000 rpms and then revs, bucks, and surges til it finally shifts.
Sometimes when I'm driving down the interstate at a constant speed it'll just rev up 100 or 200 rpm's...won't go out of gear or from that I can tell...just revs. You don't feel it surge or anything at all.
I did a tb swap a while back and since I was lazy, I swapped all the sensors with it. I recently swapped the tb and all the sensors back and still am having the problems so I'm fairly certain it's not related to my TPS sensor. I think some of it could be related to my tv cable being maladjusted, but not all of it...in a lot of cases, it's almost like me hitting my rev limiter, but I can't be because I'm nowhere near it when it does it usually.
The trucks got less than 75k on it and has been doing it since prolly 36k but has gotten worse over time...I've tried fixing it with the tv cable adjustment, swapping tps sensors, and a fluid/filter change (which is why it leaks...I stripped out the threads for one of the pan bolts). Every time I've dropped the pan, there's hardly any, if any metal in the pan (stuck to the magnet). Just some black sludge...almost like a creamy carbon.

Message: GB,
Have you checked the transmission temperature sensor inline to the tranny cooler in the bottom of radiator. If it goes bad it can cause problems similar to what you are having. Good Luck.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Nope...I don't have a tranny cooler on my truck? Would I still have that sensor somewhere down there or is it only on trucks with the tranny cooler?

Message: Unless you swapped out your radiator, your trans cooler is built into the radiator. If you do not have 2 lines running from your 42re to the radiator, well then that could be your problem.... My tranny cooling lines on my 97 dakota come up from the drivers side, cross over and run along the bottom of the radiator to the passengers side and connect to the built in tranny cooler.
