Message: Anybody know any details about the Magnuson Moss act and maintenance contracts (extended warranty)?
Had to take my '02 in because it started slipping between 2nd and 3rd, and the dealership tells me that the repairs under the extended warranty that I purchased when I bought it would likely be denied if they learn that I have a Superchips programmer in it.
Say what?
I told him to put it back together - they hadn't really done anything yet - and I'm going to retrieve it and take it to another dealer in the next town, after setting it back to stock. I'd left the Superchips in it, thinking that any codes it captured would still be there, but would likely be wiped out if I set it back to stock.
Somebody, please tell me this guy is wrong! And they're supposedly a 5-star dealer....

Message: My brother works at a ford stealership, and they do lots of head jobs on the 6.0 diesel. If it has had a chip, comp. upgrade or anything they wont do it under warranty. Just go to another stealership and leave it stock and dont mention the superchips.

Message: You know they're wrong - Magnuson Moss says they have to prove superchips caused the problem to deny the claim. 5 star doesn't seem to mean much from what I've seen, handed out to just about every dealer, isn't it ? I'd do just what you're planning.

Message: Assuming the dealer never contacted the extended insurer, going to another shop is the answer after removing the chip. BUT, if they already contacted the insurer, no mater where you go your S O L> Also it's correct to assume they need to prove the chip caused the problem. Keep in mind, there a large operation and have lawyers on retainer so it's business as usual. You on the other hand will need to hire one and there is no question the cost will exceed the repair. These extended insurers are very smart and leave nothing to chance. They will use any excuse they can think of to NOT pay a claim. There most likely doing this same thing to hundreds any given day so were talking a lot of money in there pockets. Reguardless, good luck. There is a very very small amount of claims they change there minds on. Myself, I wouldn't spend a single dollor on an extended warrenty.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: I'd ask why they thought the chip caused the problem.
sometimes you need to call their bluff. I had a ford service guy (not tech, but guy taking in cars, setting appointments, etc) tell me ford engines won't work with any other plug but a motor craft. i challenged him to get me a tech out of the shop to tell me that, he refused. I left, he didn't like the few select words I had.
obio3 is right, they have to prove it, but they have more "guns" than you.

Message: Well, I got it back to the house and I don't think it slipped a single time between the dealership and here. The tech says that it is absolutely slipping between 2nd and 3rd, but it isn't capturing any codes. According to him, it's unusual to slip between 2 & 3 - it's usually between 1st and 2nd.
The Superchips was still loaded, and there were no codes (unless he reset them). I set it back to stock and drove it about 15 miles, and when I looked, there weren't any codes either - most likely because it stopped slipping bad enough for me to notice.
Obio3, I don't normally buy maintenance contracts either, but I got such a deal on this truck when I bought it that I could afford one, and I expected to keep the truck for several years. I've already used it a couple times for some rather expensive repairs, and it'll pay for itself a couple times over if this tranny repair turns out to cost what I think it will. This is one time that I'm GLAD I have it - it's the only extended warranty that we own.

Message: Extended warranties are like medical insurance. It is great when you need it but a money pit when you don't.
If you have an extended warranty you don't necessarily have to take it to a dealer. Check your contract.
